James McCool Obituary

McCool, James Alvis

July 30, 1937 - April 7, 2023

Jim passed away peacefully at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home on Good Friday, April 7th. Born July 30, 1937 he was preceded in death by his parents, Guy and Kizzie McCool of Burkesville, Ky. and brothers Harold and Dennison (Denny) McCool. Dr. Jim is survived by business and life partner Bruce C. Anderson of the home. He was beloved by remaining family members, niece Keyna McCool and nephew Robert, Goddaughter Pamela Clitherow, Godson Christopher Taylor and Goddaughter Jessica Barringer. Jim was born in a one room log cabin and attended a one room school house until eight grade. He graduated from Burkesville High School and Berea College. He continued his medical studies at Bowman Gray School of Medicine, interrupted by a two year tour of duty with the US Air Force, where he was a Major when stationed in Minot Air Force base, Minot, N.D.

Jim was a partner in the Pathology Department at Forsyth Memorial Hospital for 35 years and openly shared his professional expertise and knowledge with others on staff, where he was affectionately known as "Father Goose".

An avid gardener, orchid and bird enthusiast, and dog breeder, Jim's interests and expertise reached far beyond his profession. A world traveler, he and Bruce visited over 30 foreign countries in their 58 years together.

During Jim and Bruce's many years at the historic Lasater Mill House in Clemmons, they graciously opened their home for fund-raising events for many non-profit organizations throughout the decades.

In lieu of flowers, make any memorials to Berea College, Berea, Ky. or the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Special thanks to his caregivers Adam Killingsworth, Valerie, Lillian the staff of Griswold Home Care and Trellis Hospice Home during the last few months.

A celebration of life will follow at a later date.

I'm so sorry to hear of Dr. McCool's passing. I learned so much from him during my time in transcription. He was always so willing to teach me about Pathology. I appreciated his patience and enjoyed my time with him and the other pathologists. I've thought about him many times over the years. He will be greatly missed. My thoughts and prayers are with family and friends.

Dr. Jim McCool was a wonderful pathologist. I worked on the Microbiology lab for many years. He always took the time to teach us new things. His home with Bruce was open to us every Christmas. I loved his birds and the decor of their home.
