John Chapman Cowden

COWDEN WINSTON-SALEM John Chapman Cowden Dec. 16, 1943 - April 22, 2013 Mr. John Chapman Cowden passed away Monday, April 22, 2013 at Forsyth Medical Center. John was born December 16, 1943 in Jefferson County, AL to Ralph Thomas Cowden and Ouida Chapman Cowden. He grew up in Grove Hill, AL where he learned to love all outdoor activities. John was employed by the Winston-Salem Police Dept. from 1967-1979. Later, he went to work for the NC Dept. of Corrections, and retired in 2009 as Chief of Stokes County Probation Parole. He was an exceedingly avid saltwater fisherman and hunter. John was a loving father and grandfather, and an extremely loyal friend. In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his grandson, Tom Cowden. Survivors include his children, Nelson Cowden (Christi) of Yadkinville, and Katie Cowden of Queens, NY; as well as grandchildren, Ivy Cowden and Benjamin Cowden. A memorial service will be held 3:00 p.m., Thursday, April 25, 2013 at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Rev. Dr. Joe Collins officiating. The family will receive friends following the service.
