Lou Morris Obituary

Lou Benton Morris

Jun 15, 1938 - Jul 4, 2024

Lou Carol Benton Morris, 86, of Winston-Salem, NC, passed away peacefully on July 4, 2024, at Salemtowne Retirement Community in Winston-Salem. It is fitting that, on Independence Day, she gained her freedom from Alzheimer's. She was loved into eternity with her family by her side.

Lou was born on June 15, 1938 in Parkersburg, NC to Morris C. and Mattie Lou Grady Benton. She was the youngest of ten children, having five brothers and four sisters, all of whom preceded her in death. In 1957, Lou married Jordan Edward Morris, Jr. and shared 28 years of marriage until Ed's passing in 1985. She is survived by her four children, David Morris (Kelley), of Holden Beach, NC, Robert Morris (Marc), and John Morris (Karen), both of Winston-Salem, and Allison Muir (Mark), of Ramseur, NC; seven grandchildren: Jordan (Beth), Weston (Hannah), and John (Heather) Muir, Allie (Tyler), and Justin, Rachel (Will), and Grae Morris. She also leaves behind six great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and two very special friends, Ron Windsor and Crews Averette.

Lou was described by friends and family as "the sweetest, dearest person", "so kind", "a wonderful woman", "angelic", "a good and loving person", "a shining star for so many". She was so generous and truly loved helping others. She always made folks feel welcomed in her home, and when her children were growing up, that is where all the neighborhood kids wanted to be. She was a servant for many years at First Christian Church, taking on many different roles such as preparing meals, singing alto in the choir, teaching VBS, and typing the church bulletin. She even hosted her Sunday School class around her kitchen table when she was no longer able to attend services. She was an amazing mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, and she was adored by all of her "kids".

The family would like to thank the staff of Salemtowne and Trellis Hospice Care for their care and support during the last two years. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Second Harvest Food Bank or the charity of your choice.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Salemtowne in the Smith Saal Chapel on July 14, from 2 to 3:30 p.m. This will be a very casual gathering. Please share pictures, stories, and memories with the family at [email protected]. Online condolences may be posted at everloved.com.

May Lou's light continue to shine through the many lives she touched.

Lou let me, a complete stranger stay with her when my husband was in the hospital. I am forever grateful for her kindness and generosity. I Knew her daughter and husband, who knew she would be pleased to do so. Prayers for all of you.

Lou was a perpetually gracious, generous person who perfectly embodied the Christian spirit of generosity and accepting love. She was unfailing in her charitable spirit. It is an honor to have known her and to have learned from her example.

Sometimes your life has been made better by someone you have known. Lou made my life just a little better by having known her. A true Christian, a great Mom and wife, and an asset to First Christian Church for so many years, Lou was easy to love. To all the Morris clan, I say thank you for sharing your Mom with us and may you be strengthened in this difficult time by wonderful memories and the gratitude you feel for her presence in your lives.

I sang with Lou-Lou in the choir at church and we would often get into giggle fits over song snafus that we sang or caused and would often get the "look" from the choir director to behave. I shall always cherish those memories. I love you Lou and thanks for letting use your pool in the summer time.
