WADESBORO - Miss Lucile Crump, 103, died Nov, 8, 2006, at Anson Community Hospital in Wadesboro. She was born on Dec. 9, 1902, on Hauser Street in Winston-Salem to Joe Crump and Bell Hunt Crump. She was christened at Goler Memorial AME Zion Church in Winston-Salem. She attended elementary school in the Winston-Salem public school system. She attended four years of high school at Mary Potter Memorial High School, a private boarding school in Oxford, N.C., where she graduated. She graduated from Slater Normal School (now Winston-Salem State University), where she completed the two-year program for elementary school teacher certification. She later received a bachelor's degree in science from N.C. A & T State College (now N.C. A & T State University) in Greensboro. She pursued further studies at Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, Fayetteville State University, N.C. State University and the University of Utah. Miss Crump enjoyed a distinguished career of 48 years as an educator. She served as principal and educator in Anson County public schools, Green Hill and Deep Creek. Miss Crump was a member of Kesler Chapel AME Zion Church, where she served as a member of the Board of Trustees and the senior class church secretary and treasurer, treasurer of the Board of Stewards, chairman of the Ministry of Kindness and secretary of the Board of Christian Education. She served as president of the Young Women's Missionary Society and of the parent body of Woman's Home and Overseas Missionary Society. On Sept. 26, 1976, she was honored as Kesler Chapel Woman of the Year during the Woman's Day observance. On the second Sunday in September, 2000, she was named "Mother of the Year." And her most joyous occasion was the commemoration of her 100th birthday on Dec. 9, 2002, which was celebrated by family and friends from afar. Miss Crump has served productively in civic and professional organizations of the community and the state. She was a charter member of the Wadesboro Branch of the NAUW, N.C. Retired School Personnel, member of Pilgrim Chapter 244 OES. Visitation is today from 6 to 8 p.m. at Smith's Funeral Home. Funeral services will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Kesler Chapel AME Zion Church, Wadesboro. Interment will be at noon Monday in Evergreen Cemetery in Winston-Salem. She leaves to cherish her memory a devoted foster son who lovingly took care of her during her final years, Ralph Vance McCoy, and his wife, Mittie, of the home; William Allen and Steve Allen, Esq., and family, and Janice Allen and family, all of Greensboro. Smith Funeral Home in Wadesboro is in charge of arrangements.
