Lucille Kimel Obituary

Kimel, Lucille Lawrence

July 2, 1926 - January 23, 2023

Lucille Lawrence Kimel (96) passed away peacefully on January 23, 2023. She was born July 2, 1926 to Jerrial T. and Vivian Ross Lawrence in Albany, GA. In 1935, in the midst of the Great Depression, she moved to Winston-Salem with her mom and two siblings to live with grandparents in the Sunnyside community. Those experiences helped form a foundation for her life built around faith, family and love. As a teenager she attended Trinity Moravian Church along with other youth in the southside area. This began a life of devotion to everything Moravian as the majority of her adult life was spent as member of Home Moravian Church.

Family always came first and there was never a doubt of who was the matriarch of special occasions. Lucille will be remembered by her legendary pound cake, her ability to use Clorox to clean everything and her firm belief that Vicks Vapor Rub was the cure for all common ailments. Her many favorite things included children, flower gardens and all creatures great and small.

She was a graduate of James A. Gray High School. A devoted mother and homemaker, she did work briefly as a dental assistant as well as Christian education director at Home Moravian Church.

She was predeceased by her parents, husband of 64 years, Douglas Kimel, daughter Katherine and son-in-law Tom Skowronski, grandson Chip Kimel, sister Martha Norman (Abe) and brother Jack Lawrence (Virginia). She is survived by her son Gray Kimel (Susan), daughter Karen Alderman (Bruce) and grandchildren Will Kimel (Annie) Henrico, VA, Liz Miracle (Drew) Chapel Hill, NC and Amy Carter (Charlie) Clemmons, NC. She had 6 great-grandchildren and numerous beloved granddogs.

A private burial will take place at God's Acre in Old Salem. A memorial service will be held at Home Moravian Church Monday, January 30 at 11 a.m. with a visitation following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Moravian Music Foundation, 457 South Church St., Winston-Salem, NC 27101. Condolences may be made online at www.salemfh.com.

Such fond memories of sweet Lucille. I'm a life long member of Home Moravian and knew Lucille and Doug through my parents initially. My parents, Jim & Tommie DeViney, always spoke fondly of Doug and Lucille and loved to chatt with them both at church and of course dear Doug when he worked at Voglers. Lucille always made a point to speak to us at church. She will be missed! Prayers for peace and comfort for the family.

May you be in the loving arms of God. I randomly go to the obituaries everyday just to randomly click on people and read something about them. Glad I clicked on you. Yes. My father went to Gray....you probably knew him. And I was the last class of Gray in 1965. And I knew your husband well through the year when I would see him at Norman Stockton. My God bring peace to your family and rejoice her reunion with Doug.

Dear Kimel Family,

Our fathers worked together at Norman Stockton, and I thought that your mother was such a lovely person. We know that you will miss her; take solace in sweet memories of her and with pride in her service to the church and community. Our mothers were firm believers in the power of Chlorox, Vicks VaporRub, and the appeal of a homemade pound cake!
