Moses Daniels Obituary

Daniels, Jr, Moses Barnes

July 18, 1933 - July 11, 2023

Moses Barnes Daniels Jr., age 89, of Winston-Salem, NC, passed away peacefully on July 11, 2023. He was born in Watha, NC on July 18, 1933, to Moses Barnes and Mary Lou (McGowen) Daniels. Our daddy was a gentle, kind, and soft-spoken man, known for his sense of humor and generosity.

Barnes is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Alice Patricia Hoge Daniels of Winston-Salem, NC, and their two children, Michael Barnes Daniels (Linda) of Morganton, NC, and Linda Daniels Stone (Frank) of Port Orange, FL.

Barnes grew up in Wilson, NC with his brother, John Hall Daniels. He graduated from North Carolina State University in 1955 earning a BS in Mechanical Engineering finishing 4th in his class. Immediately after graduation he served 16 months in the United States Air Force, stationed at Elmendorf A.F.B. in Anchorage, AK and George A.F.B. in Victorville, CA. Barnes was accepted into the Chrysler Institute of Engineering in Detroit, MI for a two-year fellowship in 1957 where he earned a Master of Automotive Engineering degree. In 1961, he moved his family to Wappingers Falls, NY to work for Texaco in Beacon. Eight years later he returned to North Carolina to accept a new engineering position with Ingersoll Rand, in Mocksville and his family settled in Winston-Salem. After a highly successful career Barnes retired from Ingersoll Rand in 1993.

Barnes was a devoted member of St. Timothy s Episcopal Church for over 50 years. He actively participated in various church activities, including playing church softball, volunteering, designing, and building an outdoor chapel, and providing assistance at a local homeless shelter to name only a few. He found joy in helping others.

Barnes was an active person and enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, gardening, reading, and playing various sports. He was an avid car collector, restorer, and automotive enthusiast. He was a charter member of The Ramchargers, a Chrysler team of engineers and drag racers. He and the team set and held many racing records, developed many automotive innovations, and designed and developed the famous Chrysler 426 Hemi engine that dominated drag racing in the early 1960's and still does.

A celebration of life will take place at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to St Timothy's Episcopal Church, 2575 Parkway Dr, Winston-Salem, NC 27103, for the maintenance of the memorial garden and urn field.

Moses Barnes Daniels, Jr. will be dearly missed by his family, friends, and all who had the pleasure of knowing him. Our daddy was an exceptional man in so many ways and a remarkable father and husband.

Barnes was a friend who always made me happy and was ready with a smile and wit that's rare these days.
He would drop by and ask questions, always learning, and offer advice that I appreciate anytime.
Barnes has been on my mind for some time and I know I will enjoy his company and wit again!
My heart goes out to his family and friends.....

I spent many an hour working on the grounds of St.Timothy with Barnes. He was always cheerful and willing to help. We sometimes got a PB´s hotdog and ate and talked in the memorial garden.
I will always remember him fondly. He was a true friend.
My deepest sympathies

I worked for Barnes many years at Ingersoll Rand in Mocksville. I transferred out of purchasing/Engineering to Service literature as copywriter/tech media coordinator replacing Cornelia Smith as she retired. Took my first plane ride with Barnes to a training event in New Orleans. He got a set of wings from stewardess and gave to me. Loved Barnes, great boss and proud to have known him.

Barnes was a good friend of my father, Ernest "Red" Robbins. They both shared a passion for cars and spent days just cruising around Winston visiting other friends who shared their passion. We enjoyed his sense humor and always recognized him in his green Dodge.

Absolutely the best neighbor and friend imaginable. Those late afternoon refreshments with him on the front porch were often the highlight of my day. RIP Barnes.

I loved Barnes! He was so special-kind, smart, and funny. He nicknamed me Bonzai as we worked together at St. Tim's. He holds a wonderful spot in my heart.

So sorry to hear of Barnes´ passing. He brought my family and myself to Mocksville in 1973. We have always been thankful of him and his friendship. And, many times in the past he dropped in and asked if we had any dessert still available. Again, thank You, Barnes. John Cottle, Mocksville Nc
