Natalie Glabman Obituary

GLABMAN WINSTON-SALEM - Natalie Greenberg Glabman Nov. 3, 1922 - January 4, 2012 Natalie Greenberg Glabman, art educator and promoter of the arts, died of a stroke on January 4, 2012 at Wake Forest University Baptist Hospital at age 89. Mrs. Glabman earned a bachelor of science degree in education and art history from Northwestern University in 1943, and married her husband, Ensign Jack Glabman of the U.S. Navy, the same year. After the war, the Glabmans raised four children in Highland Park, Illinois, where Natalie served on the boards of all her children's schools, led Great Books discussion groups, and became a docent and a member of the women's board of the Chicago Art Institute. She was also co-chairman of the Highland Park chapter of the League of Women Voters, receiving a commendation from Republican and Democratic presidential nominees Eisenhower and Stevenson in 1952 for a voter registration drive that led 99.7% of the eligible voters to vote. In the mid-1970s, Mr. and Mrs. Glabman moved to Winston-Salem, where Natalie worked as a docent at Reynolda House and SECCA, and served on the board of the Winston-Salem Symphony. Along with Barbara Reynolds Milhouse, Kathy Janeway, Helene Rufty and Witte Cunningim, Mrs. Glabman set up the "Art Cart" at Bowman Gray North Carolina Baptist Hospital, a nationally acclaimed project that allowed patients to choose prints of famous American art works for their rooms. Mrs. Glabman is survived by her husband Jack, to whom she was married for 68 years; her sons, Scott Glabman of Washington, D.C., and Thom Glabman of Los Angeles; two grandchildren; and one great-grandson. No funeral will be held for Mrs. Glabman. Her family asks that, in lieu of flowers, relatives and friends contribute to the Palliative Care Center of Wake Forest University Baptist Hospital, where Natalie spent her final days in peace.
