Nick, It's been a while. I still have a hard time dealing with your death. I have gotten better in the past few years but I still struggle. I was thinking about you today and thought I would check in. I miss you, we all miss you. There isn't a day goes by that I don't think about you. You will live forever in my memory.

I am very sorry for your loss. As a soldier, I know the risks but you never expect it to happen. As an old soldier I often say I would have traded places so that this young man would live. Rest in peace Warrior, you served your country with honor and distinction.

A True Warrior

How will you be labeled
When God does come to call
Will you slink and cower
Or proudly stand up tall

Did you make a difference
Or maybe simply try
Did you volunteer
Or let chance slip on by

These are the things we ponder
When service is our call
How will we be remembered
If we are lost or fall

All who wear the uniform
Know how this does feel
We simply do our very best
And hold to our ideals

This is just a short note to say thank you for the immeasureably heroic service and sacrifice of Sgt Nicholas Gibbs. I know that it is perhaps no real comfort for your loss, but hope that someday you will come to know and believe that there are many people around the world who have come to learn of Sgt Gibb's gift for their freedom. I am one of them, along with my children in Australia. It is with sincerity that I share that will always be thankful that such a fine human being would lay down his life for me and mine. It is because of men like him before and now that my children live a life free of fear and uncertainty. I do not know what greater gift you can give to our future generations than that. It is a lasting legacy of a life well lived, with honour, integrity and valour that few ever come to understand, let alone exhibit. My prayer is that God richly blesses the family and friends of such a fine human being. God bless you, and thank you Sgt Nicholas Gibbs. R.I.P.

Today, my #1 son, you would have been 28 years old. My, how the time does fly!!! It's gone a little slower since you were killed but I'm still taking it one day at a time. I ran across this poem and found it very fitting - the end brings a smile to my face so I'm sharing it with you & others who may read this. Enjoy!!

Titled: Ask My Mom How She Is

My Mom, she tells a lot of lies,
she never did before.
From now until she dies,
she'll tell a whole lot more.
Ask my Mom how she is
and because she can't explain,
She will tell a little lie,
because she can't describe the pain.
Ask my Mom how she is,
She'll say "I'm alright"
If that's the truth then tell me,
why does she cry each night?
Ask my Mom how she is,
she seems to cope so well.
She didn't have a choice you see,
nor the strength to yell.
Ask my Mom how she is,
"I'm fine, I'm well, I'm coping"
For Gods sake Mom, just tell the truth
just say your heart is broken.
She'll love me all her life,
I loved her all of mine.
But if you ask her how she is,
she'll lie and say she's fine.
I am here in Heaven,
I cannot hug from here.
If she lies to you don't listen,
Just hug her and hold her near.
On the day we meet again,
we'll smile and I'll be bold.
I'll say "You're lucky to get in here, Mom
with all the lies you told!"

Amen, to that!! I will miss you & love you for the rest of my life but am now "moving forward" and am finally happy once again, as I know you would want me to be but just know you will ALWAYS be with me in heart, mind, and spirit and I will love you until the day I die.

I love you my #1 son,

Your #1 Mom

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Nicholas, but I am remembering
his service and sacrifice. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

Happy Thanksgiving my #1 son. Hope all is well with you in Heaven but it's hell down here without you. This was always our favorite holiday to spend together and we haven't spent a Thanksgiving together since 2002. Maybe one day soon, huh? Only 9 days left since that fateful day that God took you home to live with him. I sure hope he's happy. I'm sure he is because he got him a REAL good Angel that day. Everyone keeps telling me that they can't believe it's already been two years but to me it seems like it was just yesterday. Everyone here still misses and loves you, especially your #1 Mom. It's still hard existing in a world where you no longer exist. Life as I once knew it has totally changed for me. Not only did it change my life it changed who I was. I REALLY try to overlook all the pettiness in the world and not get as angry so quick because after losing you I've come to realize that none of that is really important. As we've all known and really found out with you that life as we once knew it can be taken away in the blink of an eye. That's what's important is people and the ones we love. No one should ever take each other or this life we have for granted because none of us are guaranteed a tomorrow. Take care my #1 son and keep watching over all of us down here. I know you will. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for bringing me such joy for the short 25 years I had you. I wouldn't trade ANYTHING for those years. You were the best son ANY mother could have EVER wished for. Obviously, God needed you and has a purpose for you there but it doesn't make me miss you any less. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving in Heaven with all of the other Angels. I will ALWAYS love you & miss you.

Your #1 Mom

Nick was the bravest soldier I ever had the priveledge to serve with. Everything he did was either to help the unit, his family or his friends. Nick was the ideal friend. Everyone who knew him should stop and take a look at how he was and learn how to treat other people (myself included). Nick touched everyone he was around. I miss you.

p.s. I talked to your mom yesterday. She misses you lots. Love ya dawg.

Hey,hey, hey, Nicholas Ray!!!!! Gosh, we just celebrated one of ur favorite holidaze, HALLOWEEN. In ur honor we dressed up as "DUKE BLUE DEVILS!" It is wierd to think that u shud be home, having fun, watching the OHIO STATE BUCKEYES, hanging out w/ ur #1 MOM, partying w/ ur great friends, and visiting w/ ur family. I really wish u were here! I miss u! And nver will be able to watch "Goodfellas" again, since ur the only person that would watch it w/ me. Gosh, I just cannot believe in only like 34 more days it will have been a Whole Year since ur Sun was set. It feels like just yesterday that we got the news and all the music stopped the church bells rang so loud, the flags stood so High. Just Wish YOU Were Here! We LOVE YOU NICHOLAS! FOREVER IN OUR HEARTS XOXO! Aunt Lisa Marissa & Aubrey
I pictured a rainbow
you held it in your hands
I had flashes
but you saw the plan
I wandered out in the world for years
while you just stayed in your room
i saw the cresent
you saw the whole of the moon.
You were there in the turnstiles
with the wind @ your heels
you stretched for the stars
and you know how it feels to reach
too High too Far too Soon
you saw the Whole of the Moon.
I was grounded
while you filled the skies
I was dumbfounded by truth
you cut through lies
I saw the rain dirty valley
you saw Brigadoon
I saw the cresent
You saw the Whole of the Moon
I spoke about wings
You just flew
I wondered I guessed & I tried
You just knew
I sighed
....but You SWOONED....
I saw the cresent
You saw the Whole of the Moon
with a torch in your pocket
and the wind at your heels
You climbed on the ladder
and You know how it feels to get
too High too Far too Soon
You saw the Whole of the Moon
the Whole of the Moon!
Unicorns & cannonballs
palaces & piers
trumphet towers & tenements
wide oceans full of tears
flags, rags ferryboats
scimitars & scarves
every precious dream & vision
underneath the stars
You climbed on the ladder
with the wind in your sails
You came like a comet
blazing your trail
Too High Too Far Too SOON
YOU SAW THE WHOLE OF THE MOON.
Mike Scott of The Waterboys
this song reminds me of Nick, along with so many others. Nick climbed aboard his starship and headed for the skies.

Today is the 6yr anniversary of 9/11. I remember Nick & I talking about a good friend of mine who lost her sister in the Penn.field. Sandy Bradshaw is her name, she was a flight attendant for FLIGHT 93. We spoke of how tragic the lives lost on this day and of all the heroes and Nick was very angry for he took great stride in being an AMERICAN. Nick had other plans for his life (as did so many others)until 9/11/2001. Nick immediately started talking about wanting to do something for his country. I suggested being a Sportscaster, which he would have excelled at. Though Nick believed he should honor his country, help protect and last, but not least bring peace to the families and friends whom had lost loved ones on this tragic day. So here we are, another chapter in this vicious war, only this 9/11 "A DAY OF REMEMBRANCE" I hold moments of silence to not only honor all of lives from 9/11/2001, but all our men & women whom have sacraficed their lives and those who continue to do so. THANK YOU!!! May God hold u close and keep u safe. And Nick, I know u r in a better place, but I MISS that fabulous smile & infectous laughter of yours. I wish things were different, because U were the icing on the cake...the glue that held it all together and the calm after every storm. My heart aches knowing I can not see ur sweet face until my time is up, but hey I have something to look forward to. WE MISS U NICHOLAS RAY GIBBS!!! Aunt Lisa Marissa & Aubrey "STAY GOLD"

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

It's taken me a long time to come here and try to put what I feel into words...It's just so hard. I don't want to believe that I will never get to see that sweet smile again...or give him a hug...that I won't get to rub his head right after he gets his hair cut..and hear him laugh about it.
As long as I live, I will remember him, and hold those memories close to my heart. I love and miss you Nick <3
Rest well til I see you again.

Nick, I did not know you personaly but I was the second person to make it to you after you were hit and I wish that there was more I could have done. You were never afraid and you always did a great job. It is because of men like you our nation is great. I will always remember you and tell others what a great soldier you were. Rest in peace.

You should be so proud of your son. I never had the honor of meeting Nick but I recently went to Germany and visited his platoon, as my ex- husband is in the platoon as well. Nick's name still comes up so often and you can see how deeply the guys are affected when they talk about Nick.-How they all wear their wrist bands in memory of his life. I didn't need to know him to know that he was an incredible man- I've seen it on the faces of those who love him. I am so sorry. I will continue to pray for your family. God Bless.

“Soldier”
To Honor the Service of Our Fallen Soldiers

Soldiers write history, we pay the price
Many miles distant, you live the life
Entered the Battle of our own free will
Out of Duty for Country, and we’d do it still

We hope and pray that all will find peace
In God, in the flag, in memories of valor
Gone now, our pride and courage you see
“An Army of One” our motto forever

Willing to risk all for love of our Brothers
We’re still Your Soldiers…and we showed the way
Our Lives too short, now pray for the others
Lived free died Heroes in lands far away

Deep within souls all cherished our Service
We’ll always have what some never know
Courage and Honor, our names forever
Lived life with purpose…just our time to go

We march in the Heavens with Honor and Glory
Missions accomplished we fought the Good Fight
Many years from now…we’ll tell the full story
Until that Day we will live in the Light

Our lives we laid down in a land far away
Still watching o’er you this night and by day
No need to talk…just know we are with you
There in your hearts and we hear what you pray

Yes we are your soldiers
Our lives we laid down
Still We guard o’er you
Still Duty bound

Entered the Battle of our own free will
Out of Duty for Country, and we’d do it still
We’ll always have what some never know
Lived life with purpose…it was our time to go

My name is daniel Baker,
Me and Nick met when we were six or seven. From that moment on we were bestfriends. There is no other friend that i loved more than him. From playing football in his dads front yard to drinking at his house watching the last carolina vs duke game together. Every moment that we spent together was allways fun and we allways had smiles on our faces, except when i was beating him in Basketball, but he would allways come back and beat me and we would smiling again. The last time i talked to nick i told him I LOVED HIM LIKE A BROTHER and i allways will.

R.I.P Nick
I love BROTHER

.....Some gave all......
Every time I think about you - this song comes to my mind.I know that you are home now and not in that sandbox- but you were not supposed to come this way.I can't tell you how PROUD I am of you and grateful I am of having you as part of my life.I want you to know that I will always cherish the good and bad times we had together. You are a hero to us all- and I am especially grateful to have been your step-father. You were the son I was never able to have.I will see you again someday - that you can count on.I will visit as often as I can ... until we meet again.I love you and miss you.

Debbie Halstead

January 14, 2007

My name is Debbie Halstead and I am Nick Gibbs mother. I would just like to thank everyone for all the wonderful things they had to say about him - even those who didn't know him. He was truly one of a kind and I would gladly take his place if I could. This is the hardest thing I've ever experienced in my life and part of me died with him the day they showed up at my door. My life will never be the same. He was my life, my rock and my best friend. I miss him more than words could ever begin to explain and have never felt so empty on the inside. My heart is in a million pieces but I know he's in a better place and now I truly have my own Guardian Angel to look over me. I beg him for his strength every night to get through this because he had alot of that along with alot of love for family & friends and would have done anything for anyone. Once again, thanks for all the beautiful things written about him. I always called him my #1 son even though he was the only one I had. I could have had 10 boys but he would have always been my #1 son. He touched everyone's heart he came in contact with and mine has never been so broken or empty. There is such a big hole there that can never be filled because he had it and always knew it. Our bond was like no other and I will cherish that for the rest of my life. Once again, a BIG thanks to all that shared their feelings and grief along with our family.

I did not have the pleasure to have known your son but as I read the newspaper the tears flowed from my eyes. I have a son also that graduated in 2000 from Northeast High School. Your son gave the ultimate sacrifice for all American citizens to have the freedom that we all take for granted. May God comfort you in the days ahead. My family and I will continue to remember your family in our prayers

Duty. Honor. Country. Your son lived up to these traditions and died defending our country. You have lost your son, and I have lost another comrade in arms. My prayers and condolences go out to this fine family and their dedicated trooper. We are reminded that freedom is not free and that it is protected everyday by men and women with the same spirit and integrity of Sgt. Gibbs. I grieve with your loss, but also am comforted in knowing that this young man now rests peacefully with our saviour. I salute you trooper, as does the living and deceased members of the First Air Cavalry Division, U.S.
Army. It is now time for you to stand down, your battle is fought, your victory is won. We thank you and your family for this ultimate sacrifice and your name will be added to our prayer list of rememberence.
