Richard Rauck Obituary

Richard L. Rauck, M.D.

Feb 28, 1956 - Oct 21, 2025

Surrounded by his family, Dr. Richard Lee "Rick" Rauck passed away on October 21, 2025, at the age of 69.

Whether he was sailing the BVI, cultivating for future generations the family's property in the North Carolina Mountains or cycling FAST with friends, Rick lived life to the fullest and unapologetically. "It's better to beg for forgiveness than to ask for permission" was more than a platitude, it was a foundation for his well lived life of adventure, kindness, laughter and joy.

Rick was born to Robert and Elizabeth Rauck, and raised in Hamilton, Ohio. Rick brought his mid-western charm South to attend Davidson College, in Davidson, N.C., where he graduated Magna Cum Laude and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. Rick then headed to Winston Salem, N.C. to attend the Wake Forest University School of Medicine - where he was President of his medical school class and started his lifelong commitment to the fields of Anesthesiology and Pain Management. Of all the accolades and recognition Rick achieved while at Wake, his greatest reward came from attending a "sex education class" where he met the love of his life, and wife of 42 years, Katie.

After graduating from Wake Forest University School of Medicine, Rick and Katie headed to the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine where Rick served his Residency in Anesthesiology and his Fellowship in Pain Management. Having been awarded Diplomate of the American Board of Anesthesiology, Rick and Katie returned to Winston Salem where Rick served in various faculty positions at Wake Forest University School of Medicine and focused on clinical research and patient care. In 2004 Rick founded Carolinas Pain Institute where he continued as a leader in the pain management field and trained Fellows in Pain Management.

As accomplished as Rick's professional career, Rick was a tireless leader and mentor in his community. A lifelong cycling enthusiast, Rick was especially proud of founding the annual "Gears & Guitars" bike race and concert event held for the past 12 years in Downtown Winston's Bailey Park. Everyone was welcome to the party in the "bigger than life" world of Rick Rauck. If Rick was your friend, you knew you were loved.

In addition to his parents, Robert and Elizabeth, Rick was predeceased by his brother, Robert Rauck, of Los Angeles, Calif.

Rick is survived by his wife, Katie Rauck; daughter, Lauren Rauck Komanski (Chris), of Asheville, N.C.; daughter, Catherine Lee Rauck, of Marshall, N.C.; sister, Beverly Kelly (Richard), of San Diego, Calif.; grandchildren, Jack Rauck Komanski and Luke Woods Komanski; Rick's beloved triplet sisters-in-law, Lisa Jasmund (David), Mary Senne (Jerry) and Susan Jenkins (Wayne); Rick's cherished nieces, nephews and too many valued friends to count.

A Celebration of Rick's Life will take place on November 1, 2025 at 10 a.m. at the Centenary United Methodist Church, 646 W. 5th St., Winston Salem.

In lieu of flowers, Rick's family requests that any gifts in Rick's memory be directed to: The National Cycling Center to Support Gears & Guitars, in memory of Rick Rauck, P.O. Box 20233, Winston Salem, NC 27120 (www.usncc.org - and look for the link to honor Rick's memory); or to the Piedmont Land Conservancy, in memory of Rick Rauck, P.O. Box 4025, Greensboro, NC 27404. Condolences may be shared online at www.salemfh.com.

prof. Rick Rauck was a giant in Pain Medicine. He was a wonderful medical doctor for his patients, a great teacher for his students and a innovative researcher who offered the world a lot of new treatment to relieve the suffering of a lot of patients. For the World Institute of Pain he was great president and he inspired a lot of young Fellows in interventional Pain Practice all over the world. Rick was always modest of his discoveries and offered his knowledge and expertise to the world. Also the way he lived his live with his cancer was exemplary to a lot of his friends and surroundings. Rick thank you for our friendship and collaboration over the years! to Katie, Laura, Catherine, Jack and Luke, our sincere condoleances and think about Rick as a lovely person who loved you all!! take care: prof.dr. I had the great privilege of collaborating with Dr. Rauch when I worked as a research scientist for Medtronic. Although I interacted with many physicians during my career, Rick was one of the most earnest and friendliest I have ever known. I didn't know he was Buckeye like myself. I will miss him alot.
My condolences to his family and friends.

Joanne and I offer our greatest condolenscences to Katie and his family.

Rick was a giant to me. After finishing an Anesthesiology Residency, a Pain Fellowship and then a Neurology residency which ended in 1996, Gerry Reves, Chairman of the Anesthesiology Department at Duke, arranged for me to spend 3 months with Rick to review Pain Medicine. During that time, I learned more about being a Physician from him than I did in all of my prior education. In 1998, I had the honor to work with him for an additional 6 years during the most satisfying and formative years of my professional career. After leaving Wake, I continued to learn from him until I retired about five years ago.

To be sure, Rick was a rare talent. I cannot overstate how much I admired him. Ever the mentor, he had a combination of impossible charisma, boundless energy, towering intellect, indefatigable optimism, and immeasurable capacity for empathy surpassed only by his willingness to share his knowledge and experience. We saw an astute elderly patient together in 1996. When he left the room, she told me : "Young man, Dr. Rauck is such a wonderful physician. If you become half as good as him, you will be a very good doctor." I was astonished by her candor, but throughout the rest of my career, I have always known that I never was, but I was so much better than I would have been, had I not known Rick.

Thank you, Rick, for your friendship and all that I learned from you. I will always miss you.

Dr. Rauck was my doctor since 2006 and installed my spinal cord stimulator in me. He suggested doing an article for his magazine about me (pictured) which was an honor. He saved me so much pain which I can´t thank him enough

I first met Dr. Rauck when he came to work at medical Park hospital. I was introduced to him because of my condition and was told he was one of the top 10 pain physicians in the world. I didn´t know what to expect but what I found in him was a kind, caring, brilliant, physician who went to many links to care for me for many years. I also enjoyed working with him over the years. I would always find a space for him to do a case when he was available because I knew of his busy schedule, both professional and personal. I found in him a friend for life that I dearly loved and looked up to like a big brother. You will be missed more than words can say. You ran a good race, you fought a good fight, I´m sure the Lord said to you well done, thy good and faithful servant. Into his hands, may you rest now. May God bless your family. I know how much they all meant to you.
