Robert Mullis Obituary

Robert Mullis

Dec 12, 1939 - Jun 27, 2025

Don was born on December 12, 1939, to Beecher Henry Mullis and Flora Hill Mullis in Winston-Salem, NC. At an early age, the family moved to the Union Cross community and joined the Union Cross Moravian Church. During the years that Don was a member, he taught a Sunday school class and was also an Assistant Scout Master of the church troop. He also earned a God And Country Award during this time. He resided in the Union Cross community until he met his great love, Theresa (Terri) Wood Mullis. They were later married on October 15, 1961, at Morris Chapel United Methodist Church where she was a member. He and Terri relocated to Kernersville, NC, where they began attending Main Street United Methodist Church and later became members. Don was involved in many church activities, including teaching a youth Sunday School Class and serving on the Board Of Trustees. He was also a member of the Kernersville Fourth of July Committee. On October 30, 1969, Don founded the youth football teams in Kernersville by running an article in the Kernersville News looking for adults interested in helping to form teams. They established the Kernersville Football Booster Club. The teams were accepted into the Northwest Midget Football League on January 19, 1970 and were known as the Kernersville Tiny Raiders. The first game was played on September 19, 1970, less than a year later. Don was awarded the 13th Annual Distinguished Service Award by the Kernersville Jaycees in 1970. He was chosen for this honor by a panel of Winston-Salem judges on the basis of his community activities during the past year which included founding the Little League Football teams, serving as the Athletic Director and coach, his church activities, and his work with the annual July 4th celebration among other activities. Don obtained an NC Unlimited Electrical Contractor License, and he and Terri operated Mullis Electric Company part-time for several years. He retired from Reynolds Tobacco as a Facility/Services Manager after more than 35 years of service. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Beecher Henry Mullis Jr, David Leon Mullis, and Jerry Wayne Mullis. He is survived by his wife, Theresa (Terri) Mullis; four children, Dana Yvonne Mullis-Lawrence (Dwayne), Donald Eric Mullis (Janet), Robert Keith Mullis (Kalpana), and Sharon Mullis Christian (Rickey); seven grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. Also surviving are two sisters, Flora Anne Rettman and, Carolyn Sue Hester.

Don was buried in the Walkertown Gardens Of Memory on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, where he will rest beside his wife of 63 years. No formal service was held.

The family would like to thank the compassionate team of healthcare workers at Trellis Supportive Care for the kind and loving care. In lieu of flowers, the family requests a donation be made to: Trellis Supportive Care, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103, (336) 786-3972.

Don was my coach the first year of peewee football, very fair and tough man. Learned hard work and character from this man. Will always remember him. My condolences to the family.

Don was a special friend in our days in school. I always saw him developing as a leader. His life gives proof of that. I am sure he is busy organising in heaven.

My prayers and sympathy are with Terri and the other family members during this difficult time. My family became friends with the Mullis family when we moved in the same neighborhood in the mid 70,s. Don and i became close friends during that time. I will miss him and the long conversations we would have about different things, especially the advice about how I needed to retire. He and Terri made the best vegetable soup ever. I tried to get him to tell me what that special ingredient it was that they put in it and as much as I tried he would never tell me. So, God bless this dear family.

I grew up in the Union Cross community and thought a lot of the Mullis family. I am so sorry for your loss of any good man.
