Samuel Malcolm "Mack" Swinson

Samuel Swinson Obituary

Samuel Malcolm "Mack" Swinson died suddenly at Sunset Beach on Saturday, July 17, 2004. He was born July 10, 1956, in Winter Haven, Fla., to Starkey Warren Swinson and Eloise Emory Pike Swinson. He was an operations trainer for Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina. Prior to this position, he worked for more than 20 years at US Airways, formerly Piedmont Airlines. He was a member of Mount Tabor United Methodist Church, where he served as a Stephen's minister, counseling others and was a member of the Mount Tabor United Methodist Men. Mack was also a member of the Home Builders Sunday School Class and chaired the Great Day of Service Project at AIDS Care Service. He was a loyal member of the YMCA and appreciated the many friends and staff with whom he exercised on a regular basis. He loved the beach and particularly enjoyed long walks on the beach. Mack's genuine interest in others and zest for life drew people toward him. He never met a stranger. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Ogburn Swinson, and their daughter, Mary Ogburn Swinson and their son, Michael Warren Swinson of the home; a daughter, Tara Nicole Swinson of Winston-Salem; a sister and brother-in-law, Lynn and Roy McAfee of Tampa, Fla.; a twin brother, Michael Warren "Mike" Swinson of Tampa, Fla.; in-laws Mary Ceile and Sam Ogburn of Winston-Salem; and a host of friends who will miss his caring and unique style. The service will be held at 2 p.m. today, July 20, at Vogler Reynolda Road Chapel. The family will receive visitors immediately following the service. Memorials may be made to Mount Tabor United Methodist Church, 3543 Robinhood Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27106 or the YMCA Central Branch, 775 West End Blvd., Winston-Salem, NC 27101.

I first met Malcolm at SITEL Corporation. I was dealing with the loss of my mother, and was very sad. Malcolm helped me to smile, and reflect on the great memories of my mother, and that made me happy. Malcolm and I grew to be good friends, and I truly missed him when he left SITEL. I will always miss him, but I will cherish the special time that I had with him as a friend and co-worker. God Bless his family.

I was a member of the Sabre training team from American Airlines, and met Mack during the US Airways conversion training. He immediately took all of us in as if we were family. He helped us get to know Winston-Salem and introduced us to some great people. He will be dearly missed. I'll always remember his charm, wit, caring nature, smile, and enthusiasm for life.

Tara, Your Dad & I had a wonderful child (you). You are so much like him at times, your smile, your gentleness & friendliness. He was so proud of you & Samuel. Try to take some comfort in knowing that you made him very happy. Mack, I will miss your support & your friendship but I will see you again. Watch over Tara & the baby.

God has a plan for us all and the plan for me was to have Malcolm come into my life at the time I was at SITEL in Charlotte. Malcolm became a dear friend of mine, we took our breaks together, I went to his office when I need to vent or just hide for a moment. Malcolm always had a bright spirit and the one who could make me smile when a smile was needed. I will remember him always as so many others will. He will be missed but he will be in my heart forever. My love and peace to all of Mack's family.

Heartfelt,

Mack & I were neighbors back in the late 80's. When he moved into a condo at Crosswinds it was always like a big party at the pool. We both worked at PI, but not together. Mack was always excited about a trip or some new item he had bought for his condo. At that time Tara was about 8 or 9 years old. You were the light of his life, Tara. Then, I remember when Mack met Elizabeth. I moved shortly thereafter and lost contact with happenings. Elizabeth, I hope you find solace and peace in knowing Mack was so well loved and respected as is evident in this address book. Sometimes we wonder why bad things happen to good people but there is a reason for everything. Mack is in a better place and he will be an angel with golden wings. With sincere sympathy to all his loved ones.

Dear Malcolm,

What can I say? From the day I first met you (Remember? It was the interview for the Ops. Trainer position in W-S) , I knew you were the "real deal". Your smile, sincerity, empathy, focus and joy made you a shoo-in for the job. Your candor, professionalism, striving for perfection and focus on learner's needs made you a role model for the rest of the training team. For all this, as well as the opportunity I had to get to know you and appreciate your unique style, I miss you dearly. Keep 'em on the straight and narrow up there, OK? By the way, you still owe me one of your gourmet dinners!

You never ceased to amaze me and make me laugh. The Friday before you left for vacation you came upstairs to customer service and even though I was on the phone...you touched my shoulder and told me to have a good week and you would see me when you got back from the beach. Truly you were "one of a kind" and we all are going to miss you terribly, and the phrase "Hey now!!!" will never be said again without remembering you...and Malcolm...God speed.

Mack although I never developed a deeper relationship with you than the one that we fostered as YMCA mebers, I will always remeber you and your unforgetable smile. Your laughter echoing through the locker rooms and the work-out areas are deeply missed.

I consider myself lucky to have been able to be one of your Y friends and I do consider myself a long term friend for I met you the same year you joined the Y.

I am sure I speak on behalf of many who like I knew you and loved you when I say that we all will always remember you and always keep you and your family in our thoughts and prayers. I know you are among the angels now and I know you are making them feel equally as good as you did all of us here at the YMCA.

May God bless your family and give them the strenght to go on, keping your love for them alive.

It isn't easy to define a broken heart and at the same time, the joy one feels at the thought that a loved one has 'gone home'. My sincerest sympathies to the Swinson family. I was one of the lucky ones to have worked with Mack at Piedmont/USAirways. I loved seeing that GQ kind of look he always possessed...and the twinkle in his eyes was simply rich. Mack had a kind and gentle way of welcoming all with whom he came in contact. He would take the most boring subject, yes...the airline industry at times, and make it the most exciting. Perhaps it wasn't the subject that he made exciting, but that his approach to life was thrilling. He spoke often and kindly of you all and was so proud of his children. I remember passing by the house on Roslyn Road not too long ago when you were remodeling. He was in the road and when he saw me, we waved and he motioned me over...always gracious, always charming. Thank you for so generously sharing Mack over the years with us. I believe with all my heart that we're better folks for having known him. I shall miss the man. May God bless you as you continue in the richness of a life so full of love and family...

Malcolm, I wasn't prepared to have to say goodbye yet, but I know your duties on earth were complete. Your infectious enthusiasm for life, your accepting nature, and your ability to smile even on the worst days are such an inspiration to me. You taught me so much about the love of family and love of life. Yours were unmatched. I was privleged to be able to call you my friend if for only a short time. Rest peacefully knowing that you are loved and respected by those you have touched. I will never forget you, my friend!

I knew Mack when he was just a teenager and from reading all the entries in this book, I see that he was still the same wonderful person. He was always full of life and wonder. My children remember him singing "Banana-Fanna" song. I will be praying that his family finds peace in the knowledge that Mack is in heaven waiting for us.

Love you, mack.

It has been nearly 30 years since I have seen Mack. His sister Lynn and brother in law Roy are my aunt an uncle. But even though I was very young at the time, I recall visiting my aunt and uncle in Valparaiso, FL while Mack was staying there briefly. He was full of fun and laughter. I especially remember him singing "The Name Game" for everyone in the house. My sincere condolences to his wife and children on this tragic loss.

To Macks Family

I first meet Mack when I transfered from San Diego to work the Group Desk after PSA/PIEDMONT were with US AIR and he was one of the trainners..the BEST trainer if truth be known..he had that special way of keeping you interested in the class which was not so easy sometimes (actually most of the time)..he had that gift that so few people have..the GIFT OF TEACHING!!!!

I can still see him coming throught the breakroom doors with that collar standing tall and that wonderful smile of his...its such a shock to know we won't be able to see that again till we enter the doors of Heaven..But not to worry, he will be there waiting with the "sign in" sheet to start the next class of "new entries"...to all who knew him, it's a big void in our life that had the pleasure of knowing MACK....God hold the family in your arms!

I was fortunate enough to have known Mack for a very long time. We both worked in stores at Hanes Mall then from there to Piedmont Airlines/Usairways. Every space he occupied was full of his love of life and people. It is so easy to close my eyes and see him now with his enormous smile. When Mack was the instructor for any training class I had I knew I was in for a treat that day. Most of all I enjoyed hearing about his family. He just could hardly contain himself when he spoke of the love and pride he had for all of his children and his wife. My thoughts and prayers are with you all. God Bless you

Malcolm, I had the pleasure of getting to know you while we were in BCBSNC training together. You always had a smile on your face and saying "Hey Girl"!! I'm sure you will not mess anything that he does or your family does because you will be there watching over with that wonderful smile. God Bless you and your family. Take care.

To Malcolm's family. When Malcolm began here at BCBS (Partners then) he sat right by me. I could always depend on Malcolm bringing in a Panera Bagel for me when he passed the store in the morning. Malcolm and I then were reunited in the training department where again they placed me right next to him. Malcolm was like a mentor to me he was always willing to discuss any troubles I was having in my life and giving me advise. He was always so positive and always set me straight and boy if Malcolm thought I was doing something wrong he let me know. He was always so caring and loving to me. I enjoyed sharing stories of our children and talking about little Samuel his newest light of happiness in his life. Boy if you could see him with the grandbaby... that was the happiest man I have ever seen and so proud of that baby! I will miss seeing Malcolm and hearing about all the new things that Mo is doing and stories of Michael. He always made you feel like you were apart of his family thru all his stories I feel like I was there. Tara your Dad is so proud of you never forget that. Keep your head up and always remind Samuel of how great his Grandfather is and will always be! My prayers are with the family. Malcolm as I always say "You Go Boy"! I will miss you forever!

Elizabeth:

Though words are hard to find at a time like this. I'm sure you know that Mack had a lot of friends and the smiles that he shared with everyone left a wonderful memory. I was in the process of buying a new Honda Accord and Mack wanted one just like it, so we went to Flow Honda and bought 2 new cars - identical. He told the salesman that he wanted his car to be just like mine, and it was. Mack and I shared a lot of laughs through our career at Piedmont/US Airways.

May God bless you and your family!

I had the pleasure of working with Malcolm here at Blue Cross and Blue Shield. From the day I met him in training he was smiling and telling stories and making everyone in the class feel so at ease. He had such a great passion for life and always spoke in such high regards for his family and friends. Malcolm was always there to lend a helping hand and never complained. Malcolm had a special way of making you feel better when you were down or having a bad day , he knew just how to cheer you up with a smile or a " HEY NOW !". Malcolm you are missed my friend and I know that you are in far better place. One of my favorite songs will express how I feel and these are just a few lyrics from that song : " It's kinda hard with you not around

Know your in Heaven smilin' down

Watching us while we pray for you

Everyday we pray for you

Till the day we meet again

In my heart is where I keep you friend

Memories give me the strength I need to proceed

Strength I need to believe

Life ain't always what it seem to be

Words can't express what you mean to me

In the future, can't wait to see

If you open up the gates for me

Reminisce some time, Try to black it out, but it plays again

When it's real, feelings hard to conceal

Can't imagine all the pain I feel

Give anything to hear half your breath (half your breath)

I know you still living your life, after death."

My condolences go out to the Swinson family and my thoughts and prayers are with you. God bless you and your family.

Mrs. Swinson: My condolences to you and your family. You were all blessed to be able to spend time with this loving person. He had a twinkle in his eyes, mischief, and love in his heart- enough for all. I know that you know he told the best stories to encourage and inspire. We spoke many times of God and family. I last spoke with him the Friday prior to him leaving for his beloved beach. He hugged me and kissed my cheek. I loved his zest for life, his infectious laugh and warm smile. I am truly blessed to have met him. Well, Malcom "Hey Now"

Elizabeth, I don't think I ever met you, but I felt as though I knew you and your children. I worked with Mack at USAirways and he told us the funniest stories that made us laugh until our sides hurt. (The one I remember best is the need for straight lines when he vacuumed.) He had a ready smile, a sparkle in his eye, and he knew no stranger. I came to Winston after the Washington DC office closed and I'd spent 15 months in Orlando, he was one of the first local people I met; he made me feel right at home.

My husband died 4 years ago, I understand some of what you are going through. May God sustain you in your time of grief; I found only God and time make the void bearable.

In Christian love,

Elizabeth,

My heart goes out to you and your entire family. I got to know Mack in 1999 when the American Airlines team came to Winston Salem to teach US Airways employees Sabre. Mack made us all feel like we were family and took us in under his wing for the few months we were staying at the "Endless Stay" Suites across from the office. His generosity will always be remembered by all of us at American who came in contact with him. We have such good memories of us laughing and sharing our most intimate secrets. God bless you and your family.

Mack, I know God was in need of a trainer for his angels. Evidently the other trainer was not very effective and God needed the best! I can just see you walking into the training room talking with Gabriel and the rest of those top guys, joking, smiling, looking like you just walked out of a Dillards ad and making all the students angels feel relaxed. I am sure you are giving tips on flying, hovering and caring. You are the best. We all miss you here on Earth, but God had bigger plans for you, Mack. Everyone you ever came in contact with misses you. Keep those angels straight and always say, "Hey Now".

I worked with Mack at PI/US from his first day there. He was a very special and caring person. He was so proud of his family and took every opportunity to talk about you and your children. May God Bless and keep you in his loving arms.

I was very fortunate to work with Malcolm at BCBSNC. The two things I remember most about him are his beaming smile and how proud he was of his children. He often spoke of his family and the things they did together. I pray for all of you that you will cherish the memories you have of the time you spent with him. God had a special plan for him that none of us could know.

Not only was Malcolm a great trainer, but a wonderful friend to me. There was never a time I passed him and he didnt stop and take the time to hug me, pay me a compliment of some kind and share a happy story. I look forward to seeing him again. Love, Marian

There are no words to express such loss. Malcolm was a burst of energy that lasted for such a fleeting moment. All who knew him were dazzled by his smile and love of life. My sincere and heartfelt sympathy for those he left behind as there will be such a void in their lives. Malcolm would not want us to grieve, but to celebrate life. Elizabeth and children, please know that we are all here for you if you need anything or just to talk.

I worked with Malcolm at BCBSNC, until my job ended at the end of March. Like that of so many others, my day was brightened whenever I had the occasion to interact with Malcolm. He lit up a room whenever he walked into it.

He will be sorely missed by all. My thoughts and prayers are with his family during this sad time.
