December 9, 1942 - August 21, 2021
Our mom, grandma and sister, Sharon Whitehead, 78, passed away in her sleep on August 21, 2021 in her home in Decatur, GA. Sharon was born on December 9, 1942 in Winston-Salem, NC and lived there until she moved to Decatur in 2019 to be closer to her daughter and daughter-in-law. In addition to her parents, Lillian McIntyre and Clay Weatherman, Sharon is predeceased by her loving husband James Whitehead, and survived by her daughters Kathy Reid (Stu), Donna Sumner (Carla Korch); granddaughter, Brittany Reid; sister, Joyce Penley (Velt); stepson, Dan Whitehead; nephew, Todd Penley (Tonnette) and great niece, Miranda Penley. Sharon retired from US Airways and spent the earlier part of retirement traveling with her husband and daughters. When her granddaughter joined our family in December 2004, she finally made a trip to Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada in the winter. Sharon loved her family with all her heart. Sharon had a deep love for all animals and rescued several cats over the years, including a few feral cats that became pets. Her kitty cats, Sophie and Buddy, were her constant companions and she loved them dearly and they will certainly miss her. In the past several years, Sharon's health began to keep her from doing the things she loved. We would like to thank the caretakers at Coventry Place for being there for Mom. The biggest thanks goes to Carla Korch who took care of Mom's needs and demands for several years and allowed her to remain living independently. Carla, you are one of a kind and a blessing. The family will receive friends and family on Saturday, August 28, 2021 at Hayworth-Miller, 3315 Silas Creek Parkway, Winston-Salem, NC at 10:00. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens, 3250 High Point Road, Winston-Salem, NC. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to an animal rescue of your choice.
