Stanley Mandel Obituary

Stan Mandel, 81, formerly of Winston-Salem, passed away on December 24, 2023, in Louisville, Colorado. He is survived by his college sweetheart and wife of 58 years, Patti; his children, Stacey and Marc (wife Jessie); and his grandchildren, Benjamin and Eliza. Stan never met a stranger. His family and friends will miss his fearlessness and adventurous spirit, healthy disregard for rules, passion for teaching entrepreneurship, love of spicy food, and sense of humor.

Stan was born in San Antonio, Texas, to the late Lillian (Karren) and Joe Mandel; he was the brother of the late Allan Mandel. Stan was a lifelong learner, attending Tulane University (B.S.M.E.), Northwestern University (M.B.A), and earning a P.h.D. in business at Texas Tech University at the age of 54.

Stan's career journey followed several paths. He served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Army, stationed at Fort Knox, Kentucky, during the Vietnam era. His military service was book-ended by work at Texas Instruments and Ernst and Young. Stan would later join his father-in-law, Benjamin Solnick, in operating the Hollywood women's apparel stores in Amarillo, Texas. Stan eventually led an evolution of the business into the $10 Shoppe, a one-priced clothing chain that grew to 15 stores throughout Texas. Following 19 years in the retail business, Stan took a leap of faith into academia during the second half of his life, becoming a professor of business at the University of South Dakota and then Wake Forest University, where he was the founding director of the Center for Entrepreneurship. Throughout his career Stan served on the boards of over 30 organizations in industries such as not-for-profit, health care, and finance. He had a passion for mentoring students in business and often joked that someday he would open a bar with the motto: "Free business advice, two-drink minimum."

Stan and his wife Patti built a loving life together that revolved around cultivating meaningful friendships wherever they went. Stan was an engaged father. Stacey and Marc remember ski trips to New Mexico and Colorado, regular father-son tennis matches, and Friday father-daughter coffee conversations. They could always count on their dad for timely and thoughtful advice, most notably to appreciate the "small victories" when faced with life's challenges.

Stan was a dog-lover; he and his family shared their lives with many special four-legged friends through the years - Laddie, Rags, Molly, Oscar, Abby, Toby and Casey. Toby, Stan's beloved Golden Retriever, held a special place in his heart. For close to 30 years, Stan upheld a tradition of thoughtfully crafting the "Mandel Good Dog Howler", an annual recap of the dogs' adventures written from the perspective of the dogs themselves. Just before dying he passed on this responsibility to his children and grandchildren, and the whole family was able to share one last reading of this special letter written by the next generation.

While Stan battled health challenges during the last stage of his life, his spirit remained strong as he and Patti became active residents of the Balfour Senior Living Community in Louisville, Colorado. Staying true to his love of exercise (he was a 5-time marathon runner), Stan could be found each morning working out in the gym, and would adventure to downtown Louisville on his e-tricycle, making a point to say "hello" to every dog he met along the way.

In lieu of flowers, anyone wishing to make a contribution in Stan's memory may do so to the Humane Society of Boulder Valley (boulderhumane.org), National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship (nfte.com), Tru Community Care Hospice (trucare.org) or the charity of their choice.

I remember the Mandels with much affection and respect, and the world is a better place for every day they have been here.
I met them in 1972 when I came to Amarillo as a college freshman. Babysitting Stacey on Polk Street was the highlight of my week, so sweet and pretty and smart! And I was a customer at the Hollywood shop, still remember the coat from there.
Life took us in different directions as happens, but my family's life has been graced by wonderful canines too. The Good Dog Howler sounds delightful and a terrific tradition. What a blessing!
Please accept my condolences and congratulations on a life so well lived.

Mandel Family-

Stan was a true mentor and friend to me, both during my Wake Forest MBA years and afterwards. I am truly saddened to hear of his passing, but I have nothing but great memories about Stan. He was one of the reasons I came to the Wake Forest MBA program, he was a friend to me throughout business school (especially as I was one of the Elevator Co-Chairs), and he eagerly involved me as a speaker with his classes after I graduated. He truly impacted a great number of lives, including mine.
Sincerely,
Clint Bundy

Stan was an amazing teacher, astute businessman, and even better friend. I truly enjoyed his classes and our discussions in his office. These discussions continued after my graduation. Whenever I made my way back to campus, Stan always ensured that he had time available for us to chat and reconnect. These chats always began with catching up on our families and our four legged friends. The world will be a little darker without Stan in it. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

Just seeing this, I am so sorry for your loss Mandel Family...Stan was just an all around great human being. I had the privilege of working with Stan on the Elevator Competition...Stan was one of those sky´s the limit kinda guy. Dream it and work for it and make it happen...all the while I felt like he had a but don´t take yourself too seriously and get bogged down attitude. Just do the best you can and learn from your mistakes. God bless you Stan

After school ('06) Stan advised me while I started a business in Madagascar. He helped me talk through many major decisions back in 2012-2104. Now, he is a fond and grateful memory. Will never forget him.

Mandel Family -

I'm so sorry to hear of Stan's passing. I took all the classes I could fit into my schedule while earning my MBA at Wake Forest. It was because of Stan that I was able to jump into my current product management career in healthcare. He helped me secure an internship at the WFIRM and it was truly game-changing for me. I loved his classes, the warmth he brought, and the thoughtful discussions we had. Stan exuded calm and peace - something I definitely needed during my time at WFU, feeling completely out of my element.

Thank you for sharing your spouse/father with us. He will be missed!
Peace,

Patti and Family -
I am so sorry for the loss of Dear Stan. Your husband and father was a wonderful man! I am so appreciative that I had the honor and privilege of working with Stan for so many years in the Babcock School and then the combined School of Business. Stan was one of the most friendly and supportive colleagues I've ever had. Since you've moved to Colorado, I've thought about him often and have missed seeing him in the halls. I will miss his wonderful sense of humor, kindness, love of dogs, and generosity. I count myself very lucky to have been his friend and colleague. My prayers are with you all.

It was my personal joy and pleasure to have been privileged to work with Stan, as his entrepreneurial programs developed and soared at the Babcock Graduate School of Management at Wake Forest. He was a STAR! Under his optimistic outlook and friendship, I thrived, too. In 2011, Stan’s graduate program was again named one of the top schools for entrepreneurship by The Princeton Review and Entrepreneur magazine in their annual ranking, marking an increase to 17th and the 10th consecutive year to be ranked in one or more reports.

The Elevator Competition was launched by Stan and became a well known and most successful yearly business plan event that was eagerly anticipated. Stan also developed and hosted an annual “KACE” teaching case competition with support of the Kauffman Foundation, and he grew the BDI, Babcock Demon Incubator, in an endeavor to take local businesses to the next level

Stan left lasting aspirations for achievement and his enthusiastic entrepreneurial spirit to all he encountered along the way. That spirit especially lives on, as we recall “Going Up” for all the excited MBA students who stepped into the elevator to pitch their plan!

Charles and I continue to send our heartfelt sympathies to Patti, Stacey, Marc and Jessie—may your hearts remain full of loving, happy, supportive, and precious memories. “Fondly”—Donna and Charles Fulp

My condolences to Stan´s family and thank you for sharing his thoughtful obituary. I met Stan when he was teaching at WFU. I was a newly minted entrepreneur and he took me under his wing. He invited me speak to his evening MBA class and afterword handed me a small book Soar with Your Strengths. This seemingly small gesture had a big impact on how I have managed organizations over the last nearly 25 years!! His passion for people and entrepreneurship was remarkable.

My heartfelt sympathy goes to the family, especially Stacey. I remember seeing Stan jog through the streets of Belmar. In my child's mind Stan was famous as the owner of my favorite store, The Hollywood. Stacey, my prayers are with you for peace and sweet memories.

The world has lost a VERY good person with the passing of Stan. Sally and I remember fondly the arrival of Stan and Patti at Wake Forest. Stan was a terrific colleague, and Stan and Pattie were good and fun friends. Stan viewed every challenge as a great opportunity and never let pass an opportunity to make the school, the university and the world a better place. I remember meeting with Stan when I became the Dean of the Babcock School. We agreed on the goal of making the Babcock School the home of one of the best Entrepreneurship Programs in the country. In two short years, we arrived in the top rankings of those programs. Stan created a brilliant Entrepreneurial Elevator Business Plan Competition that made use of the elevators in the new Wachovia Building. And he did not stop there. Stan loved a challenge and he always tackled challenges with gusto, hard work, and a concern for how his efforts would benefit others. We are so sorry to see Stan go, and we send our warmest regards, sympathies and remembrances to Patti and the family.

Patti, Anita and I just learned of Stan´s passing and are truly heartbroken. He made such a difference in so many lives and he certainly did ours. It was such a privilege to know him. Among my many memories are when we held out "North Carolina vs Texas Barbecue" that was auctioned off to students at the MBA School for so many years. I can still picture Stan with his cowboy hat standing around the cooker with Chuck. I will always cherish my memories of him. Tom

Stan was among my most revered and closest colleagues at the Babcock GSM and later at the consolidated School(s) of Business. We shared many things--dogs as our best friends, bright students as a a source of joy and fulfillment, innovation as a lifelong quest, mentoring as a calling, tough criticism and collegiality as opposites that attract, and asking why not? more often than why? Dean Gary Costley hired Stan after an edict that we identify, recruit, and manage successfully the appointment of a senior practioner and a tenured woman. Chuck Kennedy found Stan, the quintessential Executive Professor of Practice--bright, well-trained, intimately familiar with best practices, dedicated to building whatever was needed to pursue School excellence, and wired in his profession (of entrepreneurship). We quite literally couldn't have done better!
Stan touched so many people everywhere he went, exuding charm, insight, an open hand of friendship, witticisms, and endearing eccentricities. Rest in peace old friend.

So sad to hear of Stan's death. I had the pleasure of working with him as his Center for Entrepreneurship at Wake Forest was the recipient of a grant from the Foundation I headed back in the 2000s. Then I worked alongside him and a half-dozen others who started an entrepreneurial support group known as VentuRealization (dubbed by the local business journal as a "leaderless band of volunteers." It was always a pleasure to be with Stan. I cannot recall him ever being anything but upbeat and loving.

I have many memories of Stan as his office was across from mine and we worked closely together in the MBA programs at Wake Forest. One memory sticks out among others - the many late Friday afternoons that Stan and Tom Ogburn would come to my office and we would have a glass of wine to celebrate the end of the week and talk about our dogs and families! You were a good man, Stan!

Chuck and I first met Stan and Patti at a conference for Wake Forest. It was obvious from the first moment that we would have a close and meaningful friendship. Stan and Chuck cooked brisket together, golfed together, and taught together. We had a mutual admiration society when it came to our dogs, and sitting together at basketball was so much fun! We will miss Stan so much, but we have a million happy memories to help us through our sorrow. Take care, Patti, Stacey, Marc and family. Love to you all.

Patti, Stacey, and Marc,

My deepest condolences go out to you. I have nothing but fond, fond memories of Stan from childhood. I loved our ski trips to Angel Fire, bobbing for apples in your garage, cub scout meetings, and tennis matches. I remember Stan as dependably happy and good for a funny joke. I have missed your family in these later years and would love to connect somewhere in the front range sometime soon.

Thank you for the beautiful description of Stan's loving life. Being with Stan always lifted my spirit -- just by being in proximity with him -- good vibes! His smile, laughs, generous and knowledgeable perspectives ... so much to cherish.
