Terry Sink Obituary

Sink, Terry Wayne

December 8, 1944 - November 3, 2022

Terry Wayne Sink, 77, passed away Thursday, November 3, 2022 after a period of declining health due to dementia. He was born in Winston-Salem on December 8, 1944 to the late Grady Ricks and Nancy Rothrock Sink. Terry was in the first graduating class from East Forsyth High School and attended Elon College. He spent his first working career as a customer service computer engineer with IBM. After retiring, he then went on to a second career with Salem Distributing Company. Terry grew up attending Friedland Moravian Church and for the last 40 years had been a member at Unity Moravian Church, where he was involved in many leadership roles and an integral part of all the music ministries, including serving as band director for 27 years. Terry's passion and avocation was music. He was involved with music groups all over the Triad, his primary instruments being tuba and string bass. He had been a member of the Winston-Salem Community Band since it was founded in 1977. He also spent many years touring the world with the US Air Old South Dixieland Band which brought him especially enjoyable times and opportunities for travel. In the 1970's and 80's, he played in the pit orchestra for many of the musicals at the Little Theater. He also played in the Society Swing Band and Salem Community Orchestra as well as singing with the Moravian Moramus Chorale. When not making music, Terry enjoyed many other hobbies: classic cars, motorcycles, tinkering with literally anything that had a motor, woodworking, lavishing love on adopted and foster animals from the Humane Society, and RV camping. Preceding him in death was a brother, Danny Sink. Surviving are a daughter, Audrey Hayes (Brian); son Kendall Sink (Heike); stepdaughter, Betsy Betsacon (Jeremy); five grandchildren, Kathryn, Madison, Janine, Timmy, and Joseph; also surviving is his sister, Gay Sharon Brothers, as well as many extended family members. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, November 12, 2022 at Unity Moravian Church with Rev. Scott Rainy, Rev. Tony Hayworth, and Bishop Graham Rights officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:45 to 1:45 p.m. prior to the service. A graveside service will follow at Friedland Moravian Church Graveyard. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Unity Moravian Church Music Ministry, 8300 Concord Church Rd., Lewisville, NC 27023 or to the Alzheimer's Association, Western Carolina Chapter, 4600 Park Rd., Suite 250, Charlotte, NC 28209. Online condolences may be made at www.hayworth-miller.com. The family would like to thank the staff at Clemmons Village 1 Memory Care and Mountain Valley Hospice for their compassionate and loving care. A special note of thanks is extended to Joe Eskridge for his several years of companion caregiving services, friendship, and love.

Having had the pleasure of serving several families over the years providing "Companion Care", I have met many interesting people...a top executive with a bank, heart surgeon, business owner, other doctors...but none as fun, unique and interesting as Terry. His obituary highlights a life well lived but space couldn't provide room for much of the fun times we had together in what Audrey call "our adventures" and adventures they were. I believe I've been in just about every pawn shop in Forsyth, Stokes and Yadkin counties! And it was always the challenge to "not find" something he needed which was always negotiated but he often walked out with something whether he needed it or not! Keeping in context Terry had difficulty with his short term memory, his long term memory was vast and filled with fabulous stories, trivia, work, music, building and all expressed in different ways without sharing a bad word or disparaging remark about anyone. He saw value in everything and everyone. His negative experiences were learning experiences and the few times he shared about things that bothered him were tempered with the expectation that things would change, improve...the glass was always half-full. Realizing how much knowledge this man contained, I soon realized he was providing care to me to keep learning! We could go into a business selling/renting tools and, oh heavens, he knew something about every item in the store...every item or, on a few occasions, would find out "what is this used for"? He never met a stranger (to the point he made me uncomfortable at times) and either offered lunch or friendly conversation...another lesson I learned from him. He was very funny and corny but took great pleasure in sharing...his funny nose often led him to share "my nose runs and my feet smell"...which I heard hundreds of times but, with him, it was always funny! He had great respect for his parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles and we frequently revisited old homesites, cemeteries with stories and events connected to each. And he adored his daughter and cherished his sister...both of whom brought a quality of life and love to him as dementia took it's toll. Terry loved life; God granted him three score and ten...plus a few because he was special! It's a cliche I've heard often when good people leave us..."the world is just a little darker today". But the world, his family and I find the world a little darker today in his absence. Knowing his entrance into heaven and his curiosity for all things there beginning with his Lord, we can all rejoice realizing we do not grieve as those that are without hope.
