Thomas Moore Obituary

Thomas (Tom) Edgar Moore

Mar 3, 1928 - Jan 17, 2025

Tom Moore, 96, went to be with his Lord on Friday, January 17, 2025. Tom was born in 1928 to Ethel Wells and James Floyd Moore in Reidsville, NC. The youngest of three children (brother James and sister Carolyn), his grandmother Moore used to say that he was the worst boy in Rockingham County.

He was educated in the Reidsville City Schools and was President of his senior class. He attended UNC Chapel Hill, was a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity, and remained an avid Tar Heel fan throughout his life. After college, he worked in his father's hardware business, Hopkins & Moore Supply Co in Reidsville. On August 6,1949, he married the love of his life, Katherine (Mitzi) Roddick and had a wonderful marriage of 64 years. In 1957, they moved to Winston-Salem with their three children where he worked at Motor Parts, Inc. and R&M Warehouse, both family businesses.

Tom was a 32 degree Mason, a member of the Oasis Shriners, a member of the Scottish Rite, and a Lion's Club member. Great family memories include camping trips from Reidsville, NC to Toronto, Canada and to Miami, FL with family friends to attend Lion's Club conventions. He was also a long time member of First Baptist Church where he taught Sunday School, sang in the choir, was a life deacon, and served on several committees. Along with his wife, Mitzi, he helped start Friends Baptist Church. He was also a member of Friends of the Baptist Children's Home of Thomasville, a Meals on Wheels volunteer, and a lifetime volunteer for Forsyth Hospital.

He was a friend, counselor, and good samaritan to many. Tom never knew a stranger and always had a good joke to tell. Tom loved going out for breakfast, especially if there was a drive through the countryside afterwards. He loved spending time at the beach, especially if the grandkids were there. He also loved going to the Pennington Chevrolet reunions in Mocksville where he enjoyed spending time with Jack and many other friends. And then, of course, there was his love for those Heels!

Tom was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Mitzi. He is survived and missed by his children, Susan Moore, Janice Carroll, and Tom Moore, Jr.; grandchildren, Beth Southern (Bill), Will Carroll, Michael Baccich (Jessie), Jason Moore (Alex), and Meredith Gray (Jordan); great-grandchildren, Kate, Flynn, and Caroline Southern, Bennett and Austen Moore, Henderson Gray, and George Baccich who was born just a few hours before our Papa left us.

The family wishes to thank the staff at Brookridge Retirement Community Assisted Living and Skilled Care for their loving care and support of our Papa during his time there. Special love and gratitude is sent to Timyia Brown, his caretaker and "adopted daughter", for all the love and care you gave him. You and Dad truly shared a special bond.

The service to commemorate his life will be held at First Baptist on Fifth on Saturday, January 25, at 2 p.m. in the sanctuary with a reception to follow in the Kelly Auditorium. The family will hold a private burial that morning.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Baptist Children's Home of NC, PO Box 338, Thomasville, NC 27360. Online condolences can be made through www.salemfh.com.

My husband and I wee members of Friend Baptist Church when Tom and Mitzi helped start the church. We fell in love with both of them and loved them dearly. The seriousness they share in the beginning of the church will be remembered always. But the laughter and happiness they brought was even more special to me. They both loved with all their heart. May their love continue through the love they gave to all they met.
