He is survived by his only daughter, Andi Milam Reynolds and her husband Dennis Paul Affholter; as well as his constant redheaded companions, Trouble and Missy.
Cal was born May 7, 1931, in Pittsylvania, VA, to the late Wallace Lehman Reynolds and Gordon Milam Richards. He was named for a favorite uncle, thoroughbred breeder and trainer James Calvin Milam, with whom he spent may happy summer days in bluegrass country.
Cal earned a BS in Business Administration from Bryant College, Smithfield, RI, and pursued advanced study of economics at Wake Forest University. He served in the US Army during the Korean War and continued his service in the US Army Reserve through 1975 retiring as a chief warrant officer (CWO4).
A second generation Eagle Scout and member of the Order of the Arrow, Cal enthusiastically supported scouting activities. His son and grandson achieved their Eagle awards as well, marking four generations.
In his early career, Cal learned the real estate business and honed his negotiating skills by scouting the United States and Europe for property on which to bury new electrical cables for Western Electric Company.
In 1974 he founded W. Calvin Reynolds & Associates Inc., focusing on residential, commercial real estate and appraisal, which he led until his death with the assistance of Nancy and a very dedicated team of employees and associates.
Through that business, Cal became an integral player in the Triad real estate community. He was named to the High Point Association of Realtors Hall of Fame and was awarded the J. Scott Robinson Lifetime Achievement Award by the North Carolina Appraisal Institute.
Among his many community activities and contributions, Cal was a 30 member of the board of directors of the Katherine L. Brown Foundation overseeing significant charitable financial distributions to the High Point community.
He served on the Society of Real Estate Appraisers' International Board of Governors; was an instructor for the Society and for the American Institute of Real Estate Appraisers; served on boards and national committees, including ethics and review, for both of the Appraisal Institute's predecessor organizations. As a private pilot, Cal and Nancy often flew together for business and pleasure.
As an instructor for both the Society of Real Estate Appraisers and the Appraisal Institute, he took pride in the many appraisers he guided from initial courses through full licensing. His commitment to the industry led to his co-founding an appraiser scholarship at Appalachian State University.
As an investor in North Carolina's 98 year old Mount Olive Pickle Company, Inc., Cal served on the private company's board of directors for many years.
Cal was a cherished member of the Carolina Model Railroaders Inc which for many decades benefited from his passion and energy at the J. Douglas Gaylon Depot in downtown Greensboro, NC. His profound impact on the club was recognized with the esteemed title of Honorary Lifetime Member and receipt of the John W Coffman Memorial Award. Cal was active in the Southern Railway Historical Association founded in November 1986.
He was a founding member of Winston-Salem Rose Society established in 1953. Throughout the years he served as president and Consulting Rosarian Emeritus. Cal and Nancy chaired the holiday brunch for many years, opened their garden for tours, meetings, and the annual WSRS picnic. Their backyard garden, home to more than 150 rose bushes, was a delight to all who visited. He received the Bronze Honor Medal for outstanding service to the Winston Salem Rose Society.
