William Mueller Obituary

William "Bill" Wallace Mueller, 86, of Winston-Salem, NC, passed away at his residence at Homestead Hills, on November 26, 2024, after many months of declining health. Bill was the son of William Frederick and Mary Mueller of St. Louis, MO.
After completing high school in St. Louis, Bill was recruited by Coach Bob Light to play college basketball at Appalachian State Teachers College (ASU), where he met the love of his life, Laura "Pat" (Harwood) Mueller, who he married in December 1960.
After Bill graduated, he was a basketball coach and taught at Surry Central High School in Mt. Airy, NC, for two years. Eventually, Bill and Pat left the mountains for opportunities in Winston-Salem, NC. After a stent teaching in Winston, Bill joined Forsyth Memorial Hospital where he began his career in the training department and later managing the ER for a year. He then found his true calling where he created and grew their auto visual department into what it is today. He retired in April 2003 but returned as a hospital volunteer for many years after that. He loved his hospital community.
Bill is survived by his wife of 64 years, Pat (Harwood) Mueller; and daughter, Lori (Mike) Ortiz. He has three loving grandsons, Peyton (17), Jacob (17), and Taylor Ortiz (11). He was predeceased by daughter, Merri "Beth" Elizabeth Mueller, who passed away unexpectedly in December 2023; and his sister, Shirley Mueller, who passed away in August 2022.
Visitation and a service will be held on Saturday, December 14, at Salem Funeral Home on Reynolda Road from 1 to 2 p.m., with his service beginning at 2 p.m. A family graveside service will take place directly after at Forsyth Memorial Park.

I worked with Bill for all his years at Forsyth Memorial Hospital until my retirement in 2000. He was always the same, smiling just like the picture attached to his obituary. While the obituary in the paper was brief, I much appreciated the longer one on this site. Bill was a fine man and was respected by all who knew him. I am so sorry for your loss at this time of the year. Pat Tilley
