Robert Sjostrom
February 9, 1939 - September 28, 2024
Robert M. Sjostrom, 85, of Wisconsin Dells, passed away at home on September 28, 2024. He was born on February 9, 1939, in Rockford, Ill., the son of Elwood and Florence (Roberts) Sjostrom. Bob graduated from Rockford West High School in 1956 and enlisted in the United States Air Force where he was stationed at Andersen Air Force Base in Guam, completing his five year term of duty. Bob met Joyce C. Horst at their church's young adults group and they were married on September 3, 1966. They raised two children, son, Ryan and daughter, Rachael. Bob was a loving father, always making time for his kids. Camping, fishing, playing football or going swimming and a yearly week vacation up "North" were always on the agenda.
Bob graduated from Northern IL University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. He was an accomplished artist in photography and pottery. He perfected a process whereby applying a liquid light solution he could develop and print his own black and white photography directly onto his stoneware pottery. For over 30 years he and Joyce participated in juried art shows. They would do between 30 to 35 art shows a year, traveling all around the country.
They retired in 2018, sold their home in Rockford, and moved up to a log cabin along a back channel of the Wisconsin River in the Dells. Bob loved fishing and working in his many Hosta gardens. He also worked part time for Chula Vista Resort as a shuttle driver until his passing. He loved shuttling the "J1s" (foreign students working at the resort) to Walmart, or the bank or mall, etc., and tried to remember their names and learn a few words of their native language.
Bob was a man of great faith in our Lord and Savior. He was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church, and he tried to live each day by the Golden Rule that says to do to others as you would have done to you; and to love your neighbor as yourself.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Jon Sjostrom; and grandson, Milo Gene Sjostrom. He leaves behind Joyce, his wife of 58 years; son, Ryan (Amy); grandson, Aksel Sjostrom; daughter, Rachael (Ed) England; sister, Lois (Bill) Hunt; along with many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 19, 2024, at 11 a.m., at Bethany Lutheran Church, 620 Broadway, Wisconsin Dells, with Pastor Joseph Doegen presiding. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of service at 11 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Bethany Lutheran Church.
