Sophie M. Fogarty, 96, Wisconsin Rapids, died Friday, May 16, 2014, at home.

Services will be at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, May 24, 2014, at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Wisconsin Rapids. The Rev. John Steiner and Rev. William Menzel will officiate. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.

Sophie was born April 30, 1918, in Portage County, town of Hall, to George and Mary (Gall) Komperda. She married John Fogarty on Nov. 20, 1937, at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Stevens Point. They were married 67 years until his death in 2005.

Sophie had run the family dairy farm, raised 10 children and grew vegetables for the produce business for many years. She enjoyed playing bingo whenever or wherever possible.

She was a past Ladies Elk member and belonged to the Catholic Daughters.

Survivors include eight children, John Jr., Sun Prairie; Mary Ann Miller, Oak Lawn, Ill.; Joseph (Lois), Wisconsin Rapids; Kathleen Doran, Sun Prairie; Robert (James Shearer) Decatur, Ill.; Patricia Miller, Port Edwards; Jean (James Dietsch), Wisconsin Rapids; and Annette Knipstein (George Strack), Fort Wayne, Ind.; 16 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild; 18 step-grandchildren and 20 step-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John; her parents; two sons, William and James; five sons-in-law, Wayne, Ron, Pat, Jim and Lee; daughter-in-law, Ruby; three brothers and five sisters.

Friends may call from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and then from 10:30 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. Saturday at Higgins Funeral Home in Wisconsin Rapids. A joint Knights of Columbus and parish prayer service will be at 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
