Straub Orville Obituary

Straub, Orville

Orville O. Straub died peacefully on Christmas Day, 2012 at the Lakeview Heights/Northcentral Health Care Canter, in Wausau after a lingering illness with Parkinson's Disease and related dementia.

Orville was preceded in death by his wife Patricia, brothers Howard "Bud" and Glen, and his sister Lucille Drumm; daughter Mary Hamilton, and grandson Seth Straub. He is survived by his brothers Kenneth (Betty) of Rothschild and Norman (Cleo) of Illinois; children Michael Straub (Sue) of Wisconsin Rapids, Barb Pagel (Jim) of Rothschild, Gretchen Sampson (Denny) of Osceola, Bill Straub of Wisconsin Rapids, Peter Straub (Sahm) of North Carolina, Theresa Gerg (Joe) of New Berlin, and Betsy Siegel (Tim) of Sheboygan. He is also survived by 19 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

He was born to Leona and Benno Straub in Edgar, Wisconsin on June 6, 1923. He graduated from Edgar High School and went on to dental school at Loyola University in Chicago. He served in the Army Air Force as a Dental Officer from 1946 to 1949. While in the service, he attained the rank of Captain and received a World War II Victory Medal and an American Theater Ribbon. While stationed at the Hamilton Air Base in Bakersfield, California, he married Patricia Ketter of Fenwood on February 15, 1947. They later moved to Wisconsin Rapids where Orville practiced dentistry for 38 years. Orville was a Little League Baseball coach and active in the Knights of Columbus as well as a lifetime member of the Wisconsin Rapids Elks Club. After Orv retired, he and Pat built a home in Las Vegas and lived there 15 years before returning to Wisconsin.

Orville enjoyed deer hunting and was a founding member of Kids Camp, his beloved deer shack in Mercer, Wisconsin where he hunted for 52 years. He also loved fishing in Canada and playing cards and other table games. Orv was a huge baseball fan and enjoyed watching most any sporting activity. Orville will be sorely missed by his family and friends.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, December 29, 2012 at John J. Buettgen Funeral Home, Schofield. Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service. The family would like to extend their sincere appreciation to the caregivers at Lakeview Heights/Northcentral Health Care Center for their outstanding care and compassion.

Dad,
You taught me so many things in life; to value family, to work hard, to respect God and to always try to do the right thing. You were such a gentleman! I remember being pregnant with Erin, and visiting you in the hospital after your heart attack. Your only concern was that I was comfortable and made sure I had a place to sit during the visit!
I treasure the visits we had with in the last couple of years. I loved telling you about my job and the latest news about dentistry. I know you felt proud that I work in the same profession you did. In fact, you gave me my first job - ironing your dental gowns! During our visits you and I talked about the ranch, raising kids, sports, dogs, and countless other great memories, including Mom.
You mentioned you regretted not saying "I love you" much while we were growing up; it didn't matter, because we knew we were loved. You made sure to say it at every visit from then on. We always knew you wanted the best for us and gave us the opportunity to have wonderful lives.
I am so proud to have had you for a Dad, and I'm glad you are finally reunited with Mom. I love you.
Betsy
