Amil S. Getz

Amil S. Getz, 76, passed away, surrounded by his family, after a brief illness on August 9, 2025. He was born in Utica on February 17, 1949, a son of the late Theodore and Rose (Sergott) Getz. Amil was raised in Utica. On May 2, 1970, he married the love of his life, Marilyn J. Salecki, at St. Mary's Church in New York Mills. Marilyn predeceased him in 2004, and they are now reunited in Heaven. A devoted member of St. Mary's Church and the Adirondack Mountain Club (ADK), Amil was a cherished husband, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle. He dedicated 45 years of service to Utica Boilers before retiring in 2014. Amil found joy in the outdoors, especially fishing, hiking, and camping in the Adirondacks. He also enjoyed woodworking, target shooting, and relaxing with a cold beer while listening to polka music among family and friends. His love for them was boundless, and he will be deeply missed. Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Michelle (Shelly) and Daniel Simmons; son, Scott; two grandsons, Cody and Connor Simmons, all of New York Mills; sister, Bernadette Sperry, Florida; sister-in-law, Nancy Salecki, of Rochester along with several nieces, nephews, other relatives, many dear friends and former coworkers. He was predeceased by his twin sister, Elizabeth Getz; brother and sister-in-law, Larry and Geraldine Getz; brother-in-law, Bryan Sperry, and brother-in-law, Richard Salecki. Relatives and friends are invited and may call on Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. at McGrath, Myslinski, Kowalczyk & Nunn Funeral Directors, 470 French Rd., Utica. Funeral services will be on Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Church of the Sacred Heart and St. Mary, Our Lady of Czestochowa where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Interment will be in St. Stanislaus & Casimir Cemetery, Whitesboro. In lieu of flowers, remembrances in Amil's name may be made to Anita's Stevens-Swan Humane Society.
