Antoinette Grygiel Obituary
Antoinette J. "Toni" Grygiel, née DeTraglia, of Newport, New York and Jupiter, Florida passed away surrounded by her loving family on Saturday, August 23, 2025.
Toni was born in Utica, New York, on November 18, 1942 to Frank J. DeTraglia and Margaret E. "Peg" (Morris) DeTraglia. She graduated from Utica Free Academy in 1961. It was over the summer of her ninth grade year that she met the love of her life Peter Grygiel, and they have been together since. Pete and Toni were united in marriage on January 19, 1963. Together they raised three daughters: Lynée, Kelley and Kara. Pete and Toni not only lived and raised a family together, they also worked together for the majority of their lives.
Everyone who was fortunate enough to know Toni knows she was a dynamo who could work circles around just about anyone. Often described as a force to be reckoned with, she worked her entire life, most recently co-owning and operating the Golf Club of Newport with her husband from the summer of 1982 until its sale in the spring of 2022. In addition to working with Pete and her daughters, Toni was a "work mom" to countless others over the years. Known for her radiant smile and sassy attitude, Toni was often seen in the pro shop, behind the bar or in the kitchen. She ran a tight ship but always had time for a laugh.
In her downtime, Toni enjoyed spending time with her family. She particularly loved time in the sun and at the beach, whether wintering in Florida or escaping to the Adirondacks for a few days during the golf season. As the family grew to include grandchildren, Toni delighted in sharing her love of swimming and reading with them.
True to her formidable nature - as she truly was "a force to be reckoned with" - Toni fought valiantly against the progression of Corticobasal Syndrome. She worked diligently in physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy and any activity that would boost her quality of life. She did so not only with a positive attitude and a smile on her face, but enthusiastically and without complaint.
Toni will be remembered for her captivating smile, the twinkle in her eyes and her saucy laugh.
Toni is survived by: her husband Pete, daughters, Lynée (Craig Arnold) Grygiel-Arnold of Chittenango, Kelley (John) Simonson of Fargo, ND, and Kara (Jim Belouin) Grygiel of Oneida and their many pets who gave comfort to Toni during her stay with them; four granddaughters, Meg Arnold of Brooklyn Heights, NY, Abbey Simonson of Bozeman, MT, Lindsey Simonson of Missoula, MT, and Aleigha Simonson of Fargo, ND. She is also survived by brother Michael of Watertown, special nephew/brother Mike of Virginia Beach, VA, brother-in-law Don Gregory of New Hartford, sister-in-law Barbara Stockhoff of Jacksonville, FL, and many nieces and nephews all over the country. In addition to her parents, Toni was predeceased by sister Margo Hagen, special nephew/brother Phillip DeTraglia, sisters-in-law Wanda Gregory, Monica Grygiel, Eloise Hunter and Patricia DeTraglia; brothers-in-law Terry Hagen, Stanley Grygiel, William Grygiel and Donald Stockhoff.

Finally, the family would like to thank the staff of Hospice & Palliative Care of New Hartford for their assistance and support in helping to make Toni comfortable the last week of her life.
