James Roddy Obituary

James J. Roddy, 81, passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 16, 2025, at MVHS Rehabilitation and Nursing Center. Born on September 13, 1943, in Utica, Jim was the son of Michael Joseph and Mary Helen (McCudden) Roddy. He attended St. Francis de Sales Elementary School and was a member of the first graduating class of Notre Dame High School. After high school, he continued his education at St. Andrew's and St. Bernard's Seminary. On August 28, 1971, Jim married Patricia Ann Seubert in the Church of Our Lady of Lourdes. They enjoyed a blessed union of 53 years. Jim was a claims examiner with the New York State Department of Labor for 32 ½ years prior to retiring, providing his family with security and comfort and his clients with a caring and knowledgeable advocate at a time when their own livelihoods were unstable. Jim was a loving husband, father and grandfather. His faith, family and Irish heritage were central to his life and provided him with a strong sense of purpose and fulfillment. His faith was expressed in his commitment to his family and the example of love he set for them. He found great joy in the accomplishments and activities of his children and grandchildren and always did what he believed was best for them. Surviving besides his beloved wife, Patricia are three cherished children, Sheila (Mark) Howland, Rochester, Laura Roddy, Sauquoit and Michael (Ellie) Roddy, Halifax, Nova Scotia; five grandchildren, Zoe, Samuel and Matthew Howland, Ari Anger Goud and Ezra Roddy; brother, Michael (Patricia) Roddy, Victor, NY; sister-in-law, Suzanne Seubert, Florida; nephews, Sean (Daniele) Roddy, Victor, NY and Gregory (Heather) Seubert, Virginia; great-nieces and nephews, Joe and Mia Roddy, Samantha and Michael Seubert; many cousins here and in Ireland, especially Mary Boucher. Relatives and friends are invited and may call Wednesday, January 22, 2025, from 4-6 p.m. at McGrath, Myslinski, Kowalczyk & Nunn Funeral Directors, 470 French Rd, Utica. Funeral services will be Thursday at 10 a.m. at Mary, Mother of Our Savior Parish, Our Lady of Lourdes, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Interment will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Whitesboro. In lieu of flowers, remembrances in Jim's name may be made to Thea Bowman House (www.theabowmanhouse.org), Hope House (www.hopehouseutica.org) or Health Friends – Oneida County (www.healthfriendscny.com). Sheila and the whole Roddy Family,
I am very sorry to hear of your loss. There is nothing I can say at this time to lessen your sadness. Just know that those we love never really leave us. They are only as far away as our thoughts and live forever in our hearts.
