Jean Irene Leitner

TURIN-Jean Irene Leitner, 88, formerly of Whiskey Lane, passed away on Saturday March 7, 2026 at Lewis County Residential Healthcare Facility. The funeral will be at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday March 14, 2026 at Iseneker Funeral Home Inc. with Holley DeLapo, Certified Lay Servant, officiating. Spring burial will be in Turin Cemetery. Calling hours will be from 1:00 pm. to 3:00 p.m. prior to the funeral service, at the funeral home. Jean is survived by two children, Darren Edward (Marla) Leitner of Pennellville, NY, and Suzanne Marie Leitner of Turin; one grandchild, Nicholas E. (Natalie) Leitner of Baldwinsville; and her half-brother, Michael M. "Depew" Hall. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Howard Leitner, her siblings, her twin sister Joan Marie Depew Mullins, John "Jack" Douglas Depew and James A. Depew. Jean was born on April 1, 1937 in Ithaca, New York, the daughter of the late Melbourne Charles Depew and Marie Burke Depew. She graduated from Penn Yan Academy in 1955. Jean worked at the Penn Yan Counter House and Emerson Poultry Factory. On May 23, 1959, she married Howard Edward Leitner at the Penn Yan Baptist Church with Reverand Charles Munger officiating. Jean graduated from the Lewis County BOCES Practical Nursing Program in 1965, and from Jefferson Community College's Registered Nursing Program in 1975. During Jean's nursing career she worked for Oswego City Hospital as an aide, Lewis County General Hospital as an LPN and RN, South Lewis Central School in Port Leyden and Constableville as School Nurse, and as a nurse for Lewis County Office for the Aging, U.S. Care, and Family Home Care. She also worked in the family's perennial flower business. Jean was a former member of Penn Yan Baptist Church, and a member of the Turin United Methodist Church where she served as Sunday School Superintendent, on the Pastor Relations Committee and as Memorial Fund Treasurer. She was a member of the North Country Bird Club. Jean travelled to 48 of 50 states in America (missing Rhode Island and Hawaii), most provinces in Canada with her husband, Howard. Her outdoor interests included bird watching, gardening, traveling, animals, and nature. Jean also enjoyed painting and drawing, sewing, quilting, basket making and playing the organ and piano.
