John Rice Obituary
John S. Rice, a devoted husband, loving father, proud grandfather and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of warmth, dedication and a life well-lived.
Born July 5th, 1943. He was raised in Norwich, New York. John was a 1963 graduate of Norwich High School and then went on to earn his degree from William Penn College in Iowa in 1968. He began his career as a fifth-grade teacher and football coach, where he inspired countless young minds with this steady guidance and enthusiasm for learning and teamwork.
John later transitioned into sales, where he proudly represented Electrolux vacuum cleaners before ultimately finding his calling in the dry-cleaning business. A hardworking and determined man, he built a successful career and retired in 2021.
John lived life to the fullest and had a true zest for the things he loved. He enjoyed hitting the golf course for a good round, listening to music, boating and spending serene days at the lake with family and friends.
He was predeceased by his father, John Rice Sr.; his brother, James Rice; and his sister, Ann Rott. He is survived by his loving wife, Martha Rice and his children Renee Fragale (Jeff), Jennifer Boergesson (Erik), Chris Rice (Maggie), Kimberly Flanders (Stan), Amy Goldsworthy (Bill), and David Heffernan (Jaime). John is a proud grandfather to Jordan and Jake Fragale, Brigham and Chloe Boergesson and Lia Rice, Stanley III (Shelly) and Gabriel Flanders, William and Brynnly Goldsworthy, Mikayla and Riley Heffernan. His great joy extended also to his great grandchildren: Stanley IV and Tatum Flanders. He is also survived by his sister, Theresa Holmes.
John will be remembered for his warmth, humor and the love he gave so freely to those around him. His family was the center of his world, and his presence will be deeply missed by all who were fortunate enough to know him.
In keeping with his wishes, services will be private.
