Josephine Wilczek Obituary
Josephine M. Wilczek, 77, of Utica, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 1, 2025, at the Wynn Hospital, surrounded by the love of her family, following a long and courageous illness.
Born in Massena, NY, on February 4, 1948, Josephine was the daughter of the late Ross and Margaret (DeMarco) Mittiga. On September 9, 1972, she married the love of her life, Henry "Hank" Wilczek, in Massena. Together, they shared 53 blessed years of marriage marked by deep devotion and enduring companionship.
Josephine was known for her generous heart and incredible talents, especially in the kitchen, where she found great joy in baking birthday and even wedding cakes for friends, family, and coworkers over the years. A woman of deep faith, she lovingly taught religious education to the youth of Sacred Heart Church and served as a devoted Eucharistic minister. Always hands-on and never afraid of a challenge, she had a passion for DIY projects, whether it meant knocking down walls or tackling plumbing repairs herself. Her home was always filled with the comforting aroma of her cooking, and her famous chicken soup with tiny meatballs was a cherished favorite. No one ever left her table hungry, or without feeling cared for.
Josephine is survived by her beloved husband, Henry "Hank" Wilczek of Utica; her daughter, Jennifer Zammiello and husband Vincent of North Attleboro, MA; her cherished grandchildren, Nikki, Vinny, Anthony, and Mia Zammiello; and her brothers: Frank Mittiga (Dodi), Anthony Mittiga (Maureen), and Ross Mittiga (Inez). She also leaves behind her uncle, Gus DeMarco (Janet); brother-in-law Danny Wilczek (Maryann); sister-in-law Linda Mittiga; dear lifelong friends Susan Bazan and Janet Rumbutis; and former sister-in-law and close friend, Christina Link. Josephine will be lovingly remembered by many nieces, nephews, and extended family.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her brothers, Dominick Mittiga and Mark Mittiga.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, August 25, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. at the Church of the Sacred Heart & St. Mary, Our Lady of Czestochowa, 201 Main Street, New York Mills.
