Lyle Aney Obituary

MOHAWK – Mr. Lyle D. Aney, age 85, passed away on the morning of Monday, March 25, 2024, after a brief illness. He was surrounded by the love of his family, as he made his earthly departure.
Lyle was born on October 14,1938, in Herkimer, New York, a son of the late Duane and Edna (Farber) Aney. He had many fond memories of growing up in Paines Hollow and working on the family farm whether it be doing chores with "Junie," taking the fall for George's shenanigans, or enjoying Doris's baked goods. From Sunday family dinners to clam bakes on the farm, family and friends were always an important part of Lyle's life.
Six years after graduating from Owen D. Young Central School, in Van Hornesville, "Class of 1956," Lyle left the farm to attend Dutchess County Community College and Oneonta State University of New York. In 1967, he began his teaching career as an elementary school teacher, in Mohawk Central School, where he taught for 30 ½ years. During his time at Mohawk, Lyle taught both 5th and 6th grades.
One of the highlights of his teaching career was in 1974 when he had a class of all boys. He took the boys on an overnight camping trip and to visit the Troop G Barracks, in Saratoga, along with the Saratoga Racing Track. He coached modified baseball and JV wrestling. In the 1970's, he initiated and developed the Pee Wee Wrestling program which cultivated and contributed to the successful championships of the high school teams. Lyle made many wonderful lifelong friendships while teaching and coaching. In addition, many students fondly remember Mr. Aney pulling their sideburns, or having them sit in a cut out refrigerator box with a cup of water on top, but also for taking them aside for a pep talk or making a mundane concept that he was teaching fun. He never stopped being a teacher, a friend or a guide.
In addition to his teaching career, Lyle worked as a high school baseball umpire for 45 years and as a bail bondsman for 10 years. He was a 32-degree Mason, a member of the Order of Scottish Rite and a member of the Herkimer Elks. Lyle was an avid golfer and was always ready for a card game, especially 'pitch'. He acquired many long-lasting friends through these hobbies. He enjoyed cheering for the Boston Red Sox and made many trips to Boston with family and friends to see his favorite baseball team. Lyle was also a steadfast Philadelphia Eagles fan.
Lyle's greatest source of contentment and pride was his family. Lyle married Kathleen Greshel, in 1977. He was father, to Jennifer (Jeffery) Jones and Rebecca (Casey) McCanta. He was also the beloved grandfather, to Alexander Rivera, Harper Jones and Jackson, Sophia and Olivia McCanta. Lyle delighted in spending time with his family. He enjoyed taking family vacations to Cape Cod and Rehoboth Beach, where he loved to indulge his grandchildren at candy stores and ice cream shops. Lyle was happy to instruct and encourage his grandsons in football, baseball and golf and watch them as they pursued their athletic passions. He got a kick out of the girls putting on impromptu concerts and fashion shows. His spirit will live on through many memories and stories.
Lyle was predeceased by his parents, Duane, Sr. and Edna Farber Aney; his brother, Duane Aney, Jr.; his sister, Doris Aney; and his father-in-law, Gerald Greshel, Sr.
He is survived by his wife Kathie; his daughters; his sons-in-law; his grandchildren; his brother, George F. Aney, Esq.; his sister-in-law, Jean Aney; his mother-in-law, Lucile Greshel; his brother-in-law, Jerry (Judy) Greshel; and many special nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, cousins and dear friends.
The family would like to thank the entire staff at Hospice & Palliative Care, especially Ann, Angela and Irene, for their amazing care.
Funeral Services, which will celebrate Lyle's life, will be held on Friday, June 28, 2024, at 10:00 a.m., at the Paines Hollow Methodist Church and burial will follow at the Village of Mohawk Cemetery. The family will receive relatives and friends at the church that morning from 9:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m.
Those wishing to remember Lyle in a special way are asked to consider a donation in his memory to Hospice & Palliative Care, 4277 Middle Settlement Rd., New Hartford, NY 13413, or the Paines Hollow UMC, Attention Gregg Sponburgh, certified minister, @ 3139 State Route 168, Mohawk, New York 13407.
All arrangements are honorably placed in the care of longtime family friends and Funeral Directors, Enea, Ciaccia & Applegate, at 4309 Acme Road, Ilion, New York. (315) 894-8000.

I remember Mr. Aney as my 5th grade teacher in 1982 at Fisher Elementary School. He would definitely keep the class interesting and keep anyone not focused on pulling sideburns or using thin part of the yard stick on the top of the head. He was a great story teller in school, I still remember the stories he would tell. I was 10 years old, today I´m 52! Some of my classmates that I can remember Danny Zecca, Scott Beach, Donny Mussella, Scott Helmer, Eric Williams, Jennifer Prosser, Lisa Mills, Stan Dawley, Shelby Bayler, and Michael Duback.

You will be missed but never forgotten.

Sorry to hear about the passing of my favorite teacher. I remember sitting in the refrigerator box and if I wasn´t paying attention, I might get smacked in the head with a chalkboard eraser. He was so much fun. I´ll never forget Mr Aney. Class of `76.
