Marie Leonis Obituary

Herkimer - Ilion - Mrs. Marie I. Leonis, passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 21st, 2024, at the age of 91. Born on November 13th, 1933, in Frankfort, she was a daughter of the late Samuel and Evelyn Price Leonis. She is survived by her children and their spouses: Daniel (Johnna) Lewis, Cindy (Richard) Armstrong, Robert (Julie) Lewis, and Donna (Raymond) Watson. In addition, she leaves behind her grandchildren and their spouses: Brian Armstrong (Ernie England), Brigette (Eric) White, Alexandria Watson, Raymond Watson, Kelsey Lewis Olmstead, Tayler Lewis, Justin Lewis, Danielle Lewis, and Samantha Lewis; along with 5 great-grandchildren: McKenna & Owen White, and Chase, Eliana, & Jaxson Olmstead. Marie also leaves behind her brother Sammuel (Carol Sue) Leonis, and sister-in-law Peggy Leonis. Marie was predeceased by her loving husband Harold (Lou) Hameister, her son David Lewis, her grandson Brad Armstrong, and several brothers and sisters, including M. Frank (Marrieta) Leonis, Ron Leonis, Paul Leonis, Thomas Leonis, Gary Leonis, Eva (Chap) Tripple, and Evelyn (Arthur) Daz. Marie was a voracious reader who loved immersing herself in a good book! She could often be found in a bookstore or library, looking for the next chapter to devour. From an astutely told autobiography to the suspense of a mystery novel, books fulfilled her thirst for knowledge and her enjoyment of an interesting narrative. She was also a political buff who kept abreast of policy debates; many of the books in her personal library were biographies of politicians, both past and present. Marie had an adventurous spirit. With her late husband, Lou, she spent many years traveling across North America in their expansive RV. Favorite spots were, the majestic mountains of the Pacific Northwest, the pristine beaches along the Gulf of Mexico, and the vast beauty of the Grand Canyons. She loved returning from her adventures to share stories and pictures of the interesting people she met along the way, as well as fun facts about the places she visited. "Ma" or "Nanna" (as she was known to her children and grandkids), was ever the wandering soul. Arrangements have been entrusted to Whiter-Hendrix Funeral Home, 100 Otsego St. in Ilion. In keeping with her wishes, services will be held privately at the convenience of her family. She will be laid to rest in Armory Hill Cemetery later in the Spring. I just heard Aunt Isabell had passed. It´s sad no one in my family was contacted. I have fond memories of Aunt Isabell when she lived at Grandma´s. The last several years I would visit her when I was in town. We would talk about her youth, and she´d share stories about living in the Leonis home. We´d laugh. She had a funny personality. She knew I loved her. My parents would also visit her often when they were in NY. She and my dad, Sam, her brother, were close. I loved listening to them talk about their siblings, and their parents. I will miss her. Condolences to her loved ones.
Sincerely, Stacie (Leonis) Crim
