Nathan Bowers Obituary
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Nathaniel Pendleton Bowers Jr., our beloved friend, protector, and cherished member of the community. Nathan, who touched the lives of many, departed from this world on January 1st, 2025, after a courageous battle that he fought valiantly since July 2024.
Nathan was born in Cooperstown, NY the son of the late Nathan Pendleton Bowers,Sr. and the late Mary Anne Shaw.Nathan attended local schools in Cooperstown and has been residing inn the Utica area for 20 years.
Nathan was affectionately known as our "Bulldog." Though he may not have worn designer suits or owned a car, his character shined brightly in the hearts of those around him. Respected by local businesses, he was the go-to person for rides and errands, always ready to lend a helping hand. Nathan created a beautiful home in the Genesee Tower, where his warmth and generosity were felt by all who visited.
Friends and family are grateful to have known him. His infectious smile, humor, and selflessness brought joy to countless meals shared, often accompanied by his favorite Joe Bonamassa videos, with one hand on the phone and the other stroking his perfect beard.
Nathan came from a remarkable lineage, tracing his roots back to the 15th century.
His Grandfather Spotswood Dandridge Bowers was an Ambassador to Germany and member of the firm of Laughlin, Gerard, Bowers and Halpin of 40 Wall Street New York City.
His Great Grandfather, John Myer Bowers, later became one of the most notable lawyers in New York State. In 1915, John represented former U.S. President Teddy Roosevelt in a libel case that had been brought against him by William Barnes who owned the Albany Evening Journal. Roosevelt won the verdict.
Nathan is a direct descendant of Alexander Spotswood, the first colonial governor of Virginia, and Martha Dandridge, who would later marry General George Washington. His grandmother, Marjorie Sampson Smith, was the granddaughter of Admiral William T. Sampson, a noted hero of the Spanish-American War. Nathan's maternal ancestry traces back to **ninth-century Scotland**, and both of his grandparents are listed in the New York Social Registry.
As we remember Nathan, we celebrate the incredible friendships he forged and the impact he made on our lives. His family would be proud of the legacy of kindness and camaraderie he leaves behind.
Rest in peace, Nathan Pendleton Bowers. You will forever be in our hearts.
Nathan would like to acknowledge Vincent Ficchi for his kindness over the years. He would also like to recognize the staff at Nina's Pizza where he found solace every day in a place he belonged and Utica Coffee Roasting Co where he visited daily.
Nathan's burial will be in the spring at Lakewood Cemetery, Cooperstown, NY and he will be laid to rest next to his late father. Arrangements are under the guidance of John L Matt Funeral Home, Chadwicks, NY. To send an online message of sympathy go to: www.johnlmattfuneralhome.com
