Peter Curley Obituary

Peter M. Curley, 78, of Utica, NY, passed away unexpectedly on July 29, 2024, at the Wynn Hospital, with his loving family by his side. Born on February 6, 1946, in Meriden, CT, Pete was the son of Joseph and Pauline (DeGenere) Curley. He was a graduate of Maloney High School, and a proud U.S. Air Force Veteran serving overseas in Southeast Asia and attaining the rank of Sergeant when discharged in 1972. Pete was a dedicated family man and devoted his entire life to his wife and children. He was a loving husband to his beloved wife, Suzanne Roberts, married July 18, 1970, in the Church of Our Lady of Lourdes. The two recently celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary together. Pete was a proud father to his daughter, Bridget Curley and her husband, John Waszkiewicz, and his son, Christopher Curley and his wife, Krystal. Pete lived every day to give his wife and children the best of everything. Pete also cherished his many nieces & nephews and shared a special bond with his Goddaughter, Emily Moylan, whom he never missed a goodnight text with. Pete was a lifelong salesman and loved to be on the road, especially taking weekend drives with his wife. He was employed at Kaman Corporation in Marcy prior to his retirement but, far and away, his passion lied in coaching basketball as a sports enthusiast. As an assistant coach with Notre Dame Basketball, Pete worked on the sidelines with Coach Mike Durr, where he impacted the lives of countless young men throughout the community. Pete's faith and community were important to him, shown in all the volunteering he did whether it be Lourdes Men's Club, leading the CYO, running the Lourdes Bazaar or his numerous golf outings with friends. When Pete wasn't busy serving his community, or caring for his family, you may find him relaxing by a body of water somewhere. Whether it was growing up on the shore, visiting Myrtle Beach with his daughter, swimming in his son's pool or going on 23 cruises with his wife, Pete always felt at home by the water and didn't mind the tan that came with it. Surviving besides his beloved wife, Suzanne are his children, Bridget Curley and her husband, John Waszkiewicz and Christopher Curley and his wife, Krystal; brother and sister-in-law, Thomas and Florien Curley; in-laws, Patricia (Richard) Ackerman, Deborah (Jay) Boak, Edwin (Patricia) Roberts and Timothy (Maryann) Roberts; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Joseph and Pauline Curley and in-laws, Edwin and Louise Roberts. The family would like to extend a special thanks to Pete's medical providers, Dr. Ken Visalli and his team, and the wonderful nurses at Faxton Dialysis. Relatives and friends are invited and may call on Monday, August 5, 2024, from 4-6 p.m. at McGrath, Myslinski, Kowalczyk & Nunn Funeral Directors, 470 French Rd., Utica. Funeral services will be on Tuesday, August 6, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. at Mary, Mother of Our Savior Parish, Lourdes Campus, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Interment will follow in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Whitesboro. In lieu of flowers, remembrances in Pete's name may be made to the National Kidney Foundation at www.kidney.org. My Aunt Kathy just let me know of Peter's passing. Very sad. My condolences to the family. Aunt Kathy (Crowther) says that Peter "saved" her life in High school.

Pete and I were best of friends.
We spent every summer together at Old Kelsey Point when our families would pack up Meriden, Ct, and move to Westbrook when school let out. Activities included sports, riding bikes as far as we could on the back roads, and throwing pears on Mr. Hubbard's roof after dark. Whenever mischief was reported to the State Police they would stop by first to Pete's house or mine. When Pete was stationed in Thailand at Utapoa Air Force Base, I took a 3-day pass from Takhli, AFB in 1969, to meet up with him to explore Bangkok.
Those were the best of times.
Our friendship grew even after we were separated by distance, New York to Virginia. Thank goodness for the cell phone. We would call or text on most holidays and catch up. I will cherish and miss the times over the years that we had!
Rest in peace, Pete, away from that dialysis machine!

Sue and family. I'm so sorry to read this. Pete was one of my favorite people. I know how much he loved his family, you all were the most important thing in his life. Working with him he made us laugh everyday. He couldn't use a computer at work. Once he retired he came in with his phone and worked it like a pro! He also made sure to share with us all the best spots to take a quick nap at lunch! He will be missed.

I had the privilege to know Peter and call him friend. He will always have a special place in my heart as you rarely find someone as kind and caring as he was. I know he will be missed by all who knew him. Love to his family.
