Phyllis Winchester Obituary

Phyllis A. Winchester January 12, 1940 – October 5, 2025 Phyllis A. Winchester, beloved wife, mother, aunt, and friend, passed away unexpectedly on October 5, 2025 at the age of 85. She was blessed to have remained in the comfort of her home in Utica, NY, always surrounded by love and with her devoted companion, Zoey, by her side. Phyllis was born in Utica, NY on January 12, 1940, one of four daughters of the late Louise (Gigliotti) and Samuel Rondinelli. After attending local schools, she married William A. Lynch, with whom she shared nearly twenty years and welcomed one cherished daughter. During this time, she worked at General Electric and built a successful career as a licensed cosmetologist. Later in life, Phyllis returned to school, attending MVCC and SUNY College of Technology where she proudly earned her Bachelor of Science degree. She then relocated to Cherry Hill, NJ to begin a new chapter as a Medical Records Administrator. No matter where life led her, her daughter always remained her number one priority. While working at Cooper University Hospital, Phyllis met and later married the love of her life, Clarence ("Winnie") Winchester. Together they eventually moved to Florida and built their dream home in Palmetto where they shared many happy years. Following Winnie's untimely passing in 1996, Phyllis returned to her hometown of Utica to be closer to family and enjoy her retirement. She found a new home, renovated it to her liking, and filled it with warmth, beauty, and her signature flair. Phyllis was an avid football fan and book lover, but most of her interests were creative in nature. She sewed Halloween and recital costumes in the early years for her daughter, made ceramics with her sister, baked her delicious apple pie every Thanksgiving and Italian dishes every Christmas. She created beautiful quilts and decorative crafts throughout the years, and ultimately her creative passion turned to landscape gardening. Right up to the age of 85, she lovingly tended to her ever-evolving little garden - a true labor of beauty and love. Phyllis is survived by her daughter, Margaret ("Peggy") Alley, and son-in-law James Alley; her sister, Constance Zogby; her brother-in-law, John Bergemann; many nieces, nephews, and cousins; and her loyal schnauzer, Zoey. In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by her sister and brother-in-law, Eleanor and Edward Patterson; sister Roseangela ("Angel") Bergemann; and dear friends Marylou Colucci, Carm Ziobro, and Sue Militano. Phyllis was known for her generous heart and her gift for nurturing lifelong friendships. She treasured each of you - new or old, near or far. Special thanks are extended to Cathy Mattia and Deb Rositano for their friendship and support; to her niece, Susie Alguire, for her compassionate care and guidance; to her nephew, Doug Zogby, for maintaining the special bond they shared; and to Jackie and Shawn McHugh for welcoming Phyllis as 'Grammy' to Erin and Jared. A heartfelt and immeasurable thanks go to her son-in-law, James Alley for his love, concern, and unwavering dedication. She loved you as her own son. Phyllis's final resting place will be beside her beloved husband, Winnie, at Arlington National Cemetery. In accordance with her wishes, there will be no public services. Contributions in her memory may be made to Anita's Stevens Swan Humane Society, 5664 Horatio Street, Utica, NY 13502. Arrangements are entrusted to Heintz Funeral Service, Inc., 1517 Whitesboro Street, Utica, NY 13502. "Just like you, I find peace, reflection, and an outlet for creation in my garden. It teaches all the qualities you provided me - love, nurturing, patience, dedication, and faithfulness. It offers a promise for the future and is a living expression of my connection with nature and the Divine. Every time I see a magnolia or pansy in bloom, I'll think of you with love, appreciation, and gratitude." - With love from your 'favorite' daughter, Peggy
