Richard Petrie Obituary
Richard E. Petrie, Jr., 66, of Elizabeth St., Oneida, passed away with his loving family at his side on Tuesday evening, October 7, 2025, at Oneida Health Hospital where he had been a patient since September 19th.
He was born on March 25, 1959, in Oneida, the son of Richard E. and Nina M. (Herringshaw) Petrie Sr. He was a 1978 graduate of Oneida High School.
On March 23, 1985, Dick was united in marriage to the love of his life, Loni Buell in St. John's Episcopal Church.
Dick was a butcher for thirty-eight years, working for Save More Grocery Store, Chicago Markets, P & C, and retiring from Tops Friendly Markets in Sherrill in 2015.
Dick was a proud member of the United Food and Commercial Workers, Local One, where he also served as a dedicated union steward, always looking out for his coworkers and standing up for what was right. He was also a former member of the Canastota Social Club, where he enjoyed the camaraderie of good friends, and lively conversation.
In his leisure time, Dick loved playing cards, placing a friendly bet on the horses, and cheering for his favorite teams - the Syracuse Orange, the New York Giants, and the New York Yankees. He will be remembered for his humor, loyalty, and the way he could make any gathering more enjoyable with his easygoing spirit.
Surviving are his loving wife of forty-years, Loni; are two children, Joseph R. (Courtney) Petrie, of Oneida, and Jessica M. (Ryan) Emmons, of Perryville; his beloved granddaughter, Zoey Petrie; a brother, Charlie Petrie, of Oneida; a sister, Laurie Johnson, of Rome; his sisters and brothers-in-law, Cyndi (Andrew) Linton of Hagaman, Vicki Buell Philo, Richard Buell, Raymond Buell, all of Oneida, Randall (Sherry) Buell, of Canastota, and Deane Palmer, of Chittenango; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Dick was predeceased by his father, Richard Sr. on June 28, 2016; his mother, Nina on March 4, 2006; his brother, Robert Petrie on July 4, 2013; his father-in-law, Richard Buell on October 7, 2005; his mother-in-law, Patricia Buell on March 1, 2008; his brothers-in-law, Robert "Buford" Buell on March 8, 2003, John E. Lerch on October 13, 2022, and Floyd H. Philo Jr. on December 4, 2024; his sisters-in-law, Gerri B. Palmer on October 12, 2018, Mari L. Lerch on August 13, 2025, and Kimberly M. Buell on April 10, 2023; and one nephew, Brett Palmer on September 21, 2020.
Dick's family wishes to express their gratitude to Dr. James Vanderhoof, Dr. Craig Gayle, the ICU nurses and staff at Oneida Health, Vineall Ambulance, and the Rescue Squad at Oneida Fire Dept., for their kindness and compassion to Dick during his illness. They would also like to express their gratitude to Dick's aunt, Jeanne James, for being by his side every day; a special cousin, Tom Boylan and his wife, Jen; his friends, Kim and Chris Hatch, Mark Salm, Robin Fox, Darryl and Kathy Edgin, and Marty Mallory, for their unwavering love and support.
Memorial services will be held on Saturday, October 18, 2025, at 1:00 PM at the Ironside Funeral Home, Inc. Family and friends are invited and may call on Saturday prior to the service from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at the funeral home, 342 Main St., Oneida.
