Ruth F. Butler

1926 - 2024

HERKIMER/NEWPORT – Ruth F. Butler, 98, formerly of West Street, Newport, died peacefully on April 6, 2024 at FoltsBrook Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing, Herkimer. Known as "Zelda" to her family and many friends, she was a gifted artist and created beautiful paintings of local landscapes and other scenes. She loved gardening, playing a competitive game of pitch and spending time with her family. Ruth was born on January 27, 1926 in Newport, daughter of the late Clarence and Grace (McClements) Fitch. She graduated from West Canada Valley Central School in 1943 and furthered her education at the Utica School of Commerce. On November 22, 1947, Ruth was united in marriage with William J. Butler at St. John's Rectory in Newport. Prior to raising her family, she worked at the former Borden Company in Newport and later was employed at the former L. C. Ford Insurance Agency. William preceded her in death on July 6, 2001. For the past 12 years she lived at FoltsBrook Home in Herkimer, where she had many friends among staff and residents. The family wishes to thank FoltsBrook for their kind and compassionate care for Zelda through the years. Survivors include two sons, David Butler of Canton and Marc (Susan) Butler of Newport; four grandchildren, Nicole (Jim) Kaz of Cornish, NH; Christina (Ryan) VanderMark of Scotia, NY; Caitlin (Terry Nichols) Butler of Utica, NY; and Jeffrey (Caroline) Butler, of Penfield, N.Y; and seven great-grandchildren, Aydin, Emonnie, Julius, Vanessa, Kyson, Camille and Daphne. Ruth was predeceased by a brother, Donald Fitch; and a sister, Dorothy Munn. Calling hours at the Autenrith Funeral Home, 7479 Main Street, Newport, are Saturday, April 13th, from 1 to 3 pm. A remembrance of life service will follow at 3 pm. Spring interment will take place in St. John's Cemetery, Newport. Ruth was an avid reader. Memorials may be made to The Newport Free Library, P.O.
