Susanne Mahler Obituary

Susanne Loomis Mahler, 88, formerly of Owego, NY, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, December 31st, 2024, in the early morning hours at her home in Oneida, NY. She was born on May 20th, 1936, in Elizabeth, NJ, the daughter of Ralph Hergert and Roslyn Loomis Hergert. Sue grew up and graduated from High School in Elizabeth, NJ. She received her undergraduate degree from Bob Jones University, and a master's in education from Newark State Teacher's College. On June 19th, 1971, she was united in marriage to John C Mahler in Elizabeth, NJ. Sue was a life long educator, beginning her career teaching 5th grade in New Jersey, followed by 4 years serving a missionary school in Aux Cayes, Haiti. She was perpetually involved in Christian Education for both children and adults, and returned to full time work in the 1980s as Education Coordinator for the Binghamton Press. She also taught college education students at SUNY Cortland, and finished her career with 9 years of service in the Vermont Dept. of Corrections, teaching an incarcerated population. Sue delighted in her family, particularly as grandchildren emerged. She and John made countless trips to participate in school plays, concerts and sporting events. This tradition continued as the family grew to eleven grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. John and Sue enjoyed a long, active retirement punctuated with travel, church leadership, and tranquil days at their beautiful Vermont log cabin. In 2011, Sue and John returned to Owego NY, to join their many friends in membership at the Owego First Presbyterian Church. They enjoyed their cozy bungalow at Paget Price, nestled among friends from the church. In 2021, John and Sue moved to Oneida, NY, to live closer to their son, Stephen and his wife, Stephanie. Surviving are two children, Laurel (Benjamin) Wooley, of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL, and Stephen (Stephanie) Mahler, of Oneida; two daughters-in-law, Susan Mahler (Jerry Spangler), of Mechanicsburg, PA, and Debi (Jon) Mahler-Baum, of Kill Devil Hills, NC; sister, Andrea Barrett of Wilmington NC; eleven grandchildren, Jenna and Ajay Shah, Jonathan and Abbey Mahler, Christine and Zach Williams, Kate Wooley, Luke Mahler, Matthew and Brie Mahler, Lauren Mahler and Chris Brown, Thomas Mahler, Eric Mahler, Benjamin Mahler, Jordan Mahler; 11 great-grandchildren, Jordan Shah, Nolan Shah, Ruth Mahler, Olivia Mahler, Mason Mahler, Laken Mahler, Max Williams, Valerie Williams, Genevieve Williams, Isabella Mahler, Sophia Mahler; and many nieces and nephews. Sue was predeceased by her husband, Rev. John C. Mahler; two sons, Jonathan Mahler (d. 1985) and Mark Mahler (d. 2003). A Funeral Service of Witness to the Resurrection for Suzanne Mahler will be held on Saturday, February 1, 2025, at 11 AM at First Presbyterian Union Church, 90 North Ave, Owego, NY. A visitation reception with family will take place at 10am. Memorial contributions may be made to The Man Dodo Humanitarian Foundation, (www.mandodo.org) a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the lives of underserved women and children in Haiti.
