She was born on May 20th, 1936, in Elizabeth, NJ, the daughter of Ralph Hergert and Roslyn Loomis Hergert. Sue grew up and graduated from High School in Elizabeth, NJ. She received her undergraduate degree from Bob Jones University, and a master's in education from Newark State Teacher's College.
On June 19th, 1971, she was united in marriage to John C Mahler in Elizabeth, NJ.
Sue was a life long educator, beginning her career teaching 5th grade in New Jersey, followed by 4 years serving a missionary school in Aux Cayes, Haiti. Sue delighted in her family, particularly as grandchildren emerged. She and John made countless trips to participate in school plays, concerts and sporting events. This tradition continued as the family grew to eleven grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. John and Sue enjoyed a long, active retirement punctuated with travel, church leadership, and tranquil days at their beautiful Vermont log cabin. In 2011, Sue and John returned to Owego NY, to join their many friends in membership at the Owego First Presbyterian Church. They enjoyed their cozy bungalow at Paget Price, nestled among friends from the church. In 2021, John and Sue moved to Oneida, NY, to live closer to their son, Stephen and his wife, Stephanie.
