Irene Louise Gray

Irene Louise Gray, a lifelong resident of Lafayette, passed away on September 17, 2025, at the age of 90. Born in the summer of 1935, Irene was a woman of strength, warmth, and devotion whose love touched everyone who knew her. She was the proud mother of Marian Lee Gray of Lafayette, Renee Locke of Otis, Oregon, and Michael Gray of Lafayette,IN who shared his life with his late wife, Lena. Irene's joy was multiplied in her grandchildren: Marie Sikes, Donovan Garrison, Cosmo Locke, Arianna Locke, Kayla (Matthew Lamson), Brian (Sara) Gray, Ryan (Kim) Powell, Shaun Gray. and her beloved niece Linda Lee Bennett. She was also blessed with eight great-grandchildren who brought light and laughter into her later years. Irene was preceded in death by her parents, Eleanor Haag Burkle and Henry Haag; her husband, Robert Lee Gray (1984); her siblings Phillip Haag, Dorthea Hoadley, and Mary Moore and her first born daughter Nora Gray. Irene valued kindness and creativity. She was a proud member of the Eagles Arie 347 and the American Legion Auxiliary. Though she once impressed many by winning a men's archery competition alongside two women and a man, her true passion was bowling. Irene spent countless hours at the lanes, even raising her children and grandchildren there-playpens often set up beside the alleys as she bowled. At home, Irene was an exceptional cook and gracious host, always ready to welcome family, friends, and even the occasional stray animal with kindness and care. Her closest friendship, with Barbara Jean Poster, spanned more than 86 years and remained a constant source of love and laughter. Creative and curious, Irene enjoyed painting, politics, fishing, and antiques. She was outspoken, compassionate, and never afraid to stand by her beliefs. Above all, Irene will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, and friend whose courage and generosity shaped the lives of those around her.
