Larry Stoner Obituary

Larry Lee Stoner, 81, of Lafayette, Indiana passed away at 4:00 am, Friday May 9, 2025, at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Lafayette, Indiana. He was born in Muncie, Indiana on December 15, 1943, the son of Wilbur and Harriett Stoner. He met the love of his life, Sharon Kay Hotmire in the 5th grade and they both graduated from Royerton High School in 1961. They were married in 1964 in Munie, Indiana and were set to celebrate their 61st wedding anniversary at the end of this month. Sharon survives.
An educator for life, Larry was a Storer Scholar and earned his Bachelor's from Purdue University and a Master's Degree from Ball State University. Larry started his career as a biology teacher and coach at Frankfort High School and two years later returned to Delta High School in Munie, Indiana. Throughout his career he served as Assistant Principal at Delta High School, and Principal Oak Hill High School, Crown Point High School and Whitko High School. "Mr. Stoner" worked very hard at learning the names of every student in his schools so he could set a positive tone calling them by name.
Larry was a lifelong follower of Jesus and attended many different churches over his lifetime. He was currently attending Sunrise Christian Reformed Church where he served as an elder. He had a competitive nature and a love of sports which compelled him to coach for many years. He enjoyed golf competitions with special friends of the OFC Club and loved adding his hole-in one to his life's accomplishments. He retired in 2003 and moved to his hobby farm in Lafayette, Indiana where he enjoyed working outdoors, watching his grandchildren's events, cheering for the Boilermakers, and traveling.
Surviving in addition to his wife, Sharon is a son, Timothy Stoner of Washington, Indiana; a daughter, Sharlee Lyons and her husband, Todd of Lafayette, Indiana; and Troy Stoner of Lafayette, Indiana; grandchildren, Elena Rose Stoner, Grace Ann Stoner, Samuel Robert Stoner, Noah Mikel Lyons, Sarah Margaret Lyons, Serenity Reign Stoner, Semeion David Stoner and honorary granddaughter, Mary Rose White. His two older brothers Donald and Allan Stoner also survive.
He is preceded in death by his parents. A time of fellowship celebrating Mr. Stoner will begin at 10:00 AM, Saturday, May 17, 2025, with a service to follow at 11:30 AM at Sunrise Christian Reformed Church 909 E 500 S Lafayette, Indiana. Dear Stoner family,

I just heard of Larry´s passing. I am so sorry for your loss. I remember him being an energetic and kind cousin. Even though I was quite a bit younger he was thoughtful enough to make me feel included. It was always exciting to get together with the Stoners at Grandma Watson´s house.
May your fondest memories give you comfort and peace. His legacy will live on through his fine family and a life well lived.

As a short time member of the OFC I really enjoyed playing golf with Larry. I am an Oak Hill graduate and knew Larry from his time as Principal. Being an educator, Larry and I would tell stories about our careers as we tried to play some golf. It seems to me that Larry was a great role model for anyone who wants be a Grandpa, Dad, educator and Christian leader! We are gonna miss you. but, I´m sure everyone that was touched by your life, has some awesome memories!

Mr. Stoner was a tremendous principal at OHHS. He was the consummate professional and always offered kind words
and a smile. His positivity and bright spirit shone through. He's one of the main reasons I became an educator and am now a principal of sorts at my learning center. Prayers for your comfort and peace now and in the days ahead. Sincerely, Laurie Mauk Steinbrunner

Long before he became my school principle, he was my Sunday School Teacher at First Church of God in Marion and helped lead me to Christ. The day Tim walked into Mrs. David's 4th grade reading class as a new student I knew I had a friend with me again, being new and Oak Hill that year myself. The first day ofJr. High, the Larry was in the commons between Jr. High and High School with a smile and a huge hug for a scared girl that didn't quite fit in to any of the cliques but whoever heart he saw clearly. 36 years since graduation and I have thought of him often and what his advice would be in various situations in my life. He was a good man to have in your corner, even if the best thing he could do was pray hard.

So sorry to hear of Larry´s passing. He never aged to me and always looked like the Royerton Redbird basketball player I remember being around. Lots of fond memories with you both with my family. Love and prayers for you and your family.

So many memories of our times together as freshmen entering Purdue and living in Kneale House. Never was the athlete as Larry but we competed and had fun. Agonized together over spit-polishing shoes for ROTC that always got demerits. Late night sessions about our lives, our loves, our faith, our hoped-for careers consumed times when we probably should have been hitting the books--but it was a lot more fun! Rest-in-peace friend!!
