Jerry Singletary Obituary

Jerry Singletary passed away quietly on Wednesday morning, January 15, a victim of congestive heart failure. Jerry celebrated his 80th birthday with family and friends on October 25th of last year.

Jerry graduated from South Park HS in Beaumont in 1951, then from Lamar State College of Technology (now Lamar University) in the winter of 1956. He spent 42 years at manager level and above with titles ranging from Maintenance Manager and General Refinery Superintendent to President in the oil and gas processing business. His first job as a retiree was as a consultant in three countries, where he specialized in startups and turnarounds of refineries and chemical plants. His last job was as a Woodlands Township Ambassador. He often said that position was made in Heaven just for him. He loved talking to people and made many friends along The Woodlands Waterway. As a devoted Christian, he gloried in opportunities to witness for Christ. Jerry and his wife were well known locally as avid swing and zydeco dancers specializing in the hustle. He was always to be seen at the township's open air concerts, where he received the sobriquet of "The Dancing Ambassador."

Jerry Singletary is survived by his wife, Mary-Lynn ("Kitty") Singletary; the couple's three children and their spouses, Katherine Yates and Dean Glade, Scott and Corinne Singletary, Christopher and Debra Singletary; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. This year would have marked the couple's 60th wedding anniversary.

At Jerry's wish, his body has been cremated. A memorial service will be held in the Robb Chapel at The Woodlands United Methodist Church, on Saturday, February 1st at 1 PM. The Woodlands UMC is located at the intersection of Lake Woodlands Drive and Grogan's Mill Road in The Woodlands. A reception in the church library will follow the service.

My Dad was one of the first men I worked for. No job was ever beneath him. Even though he was a manager (or higher), if you needed help and he was around, he would roll up his sleeves and help. A Father and friend that will be sorely missed.

I hope that this isn't the Jerry Singletary that I worked with at Mobil Chemical for a number of years, but if it is, he was great to work for and was just a good all around guy.
