Nancy Jane Couch Battle, 79, a loving wife, compassionate mother and tireless philanthropist, passed away peacefully on 11th August 2025. Born on September 22, 1945, in Columbia, South America, Nancy dedicated her life to making the world a better place, both for her family and countless others within the community.
After graduating from Southern Methodist University with a Bachelor of Education degree, she married her college sweetheart, Thomas Peyton (Tom) Battle. They moved to Kingsville, Texas, for his work where she continued her education, obtaining her masters from Texas A&M. Following this brief stay, they quickly moved to Houston, Texas, where she began her short-lived career as a teacher. However, following the birth of her first child, she moved to the northwest suburbs of Houston where she remained until death, focusing on her family, friends and serving her community. Early on, Nancy took an active role in helping others, originally concentrating on groups involving her children, including acting as a PTA officer and girl scout leader. As her children became older, Nancy turned her attention to the wider community, becoming a long-time member and President of the Cypress Woodlands Junior Forum, establishing and running the Interfaith Hand Me Up Shop in the Woodlands, Texas, acting as President of the Pavilion Partners (the charitable arm of the Cynthia Woods Mitchel Pavillion), establishing the National Charity League in the Woodlands, Texas (and later serving as National President of NCL), and actively contributing to Women Helping Women. Throughout her life she served on various charitable boards, including Interfaith of the Woodlands, Goodwill Industries Board of Trustees, and Women Helping Women. Nancy received many accolades for her community service, including receiving the Yellow Rose of Texas Award from George W Bush Jr and being one of the earliest Hometown Heros in the Woodlands, Texas.
Nancy is survived by her two daughters, Kelly Michelle Battle and Christine Battle Longbottom (and her husband Simon Longbottom), and her four grandchildren, Charles Battle Schmidt, Catherine Jane Schmidt, Peyton Kennedy Longbottom and Alexander Keith Longbottom. A memorial service celebrating Nancy's life and philanthropic legacy will be held on August 23rd at 4pm at The Woodlands Community Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to the
