"A life of courage, honor, accomplishments and experiences."

V. Lance Tarrance Jr, 85, passed away on Saturday, March 21, 2026, surrounded by and lovingly cared for by his wife, Debora Taylor Tarrance, and his two devoted sons, Lance Tarrance III and Kyle Tarrance.

Lance lived a life marked by stoicism, substance, extensive world travel, intellectual curiosity and an insatiable, competitive drive to win. A prominent Republican pollster and political strategist, Lance devoted his life to understanding and shaping public opinion and policy for national corporations, elected leaders of the U.S. Senate and U.S. House of Representatives and state governments. He served as a pollster and strategist for the U.S. Presidential campaigns of Barry Goldwater, Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan, John Connally, Jack Kemp, George H.W. Bush and John McCain.

Born in Harlingen, Texas, and raised in Dallas, his accomplishments started at a young age. He was proud to become an Eagle Scout and graduated from Highland Park High School in Dallas as senior class president. Lance attended Washington & Lee University in Virginia, in just three years earning a B.A. in Modern European History in an academic program that demanded discipline and intellectual rigor. His academic path included a master's degree in political science from American University. Later, he became a prestigious fellow at Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government.

His professional life was one of sustained accomplishments. Lance served in senior research roles for the Texas Republican Party, the Republican National Committee, and the U.S. Census Bureau, where he developed deep expertise in demographics, public opinion research, and voting behavior. Among numerous published books on the American electorate, he co-authored The Ticket Splitter, a seminal work in political science reviewed by The New York Times, and with a forward written by famed Washington Post journalist David S. Broder.

In 1978, Lance founded V. Lance Tarrance & Associates, building it into a nationally- respected public opinion research and campaign strategy firm. Over the course of his career, he played key roles in the successful elections of U.S. senators and governors across the country. His winning strategies helped shape modern political strategy in the "New South" and beyond through disciplined data analysis and an uncanny instinct of seeing around corners. One of his proudest accomplishments was the formative role he played in turning Texas "red" by analyzing shifts in Hispanic voting behaviors in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

Lance's influence extended well beyond campaigns. He was recognized by National Journal as one of the "150 Who Make a Difference," a rare acknowledgment reserved for individuals outside government whose ideas meaningfully shape public policy. He later served on the Gallup Board of Directors and was appointed President of Gallup China. At 75, he was inducted into the American Association of Political Consultants Hall of Fame, the capstone of a career built on credibility, intellect, and earned respect.

Yet Lance understood that achievement alone was insufficient. Again and again, through illness, professional risk, personal loss, and moments where chance and fate hung in delicate balance, he met adversity with an unwavering willingness to fight and overcome the most severe of obstacles. He wrote and spoke candidly about these moments not to glorify survival, but to acknowledge humility and resilience, and to pass the wisdom down to his family. He recognized that strength lies in preparation, gratitude, and perseverance rather than control.

At his core, Lance was a stoic. He believed in duty over recognition, preparation over prediction, and honor over expediency. He valued clear, strategic thinking, moral seriousness, and the obligation to leave institutions and people stronger than he found them. These are the qualities he wished to pass down: to endure hardship without bitterness and to face life's uncertainties with courage and clarity.

His legacy is not only in books written, mountains climbed, elections shaped, or institutions strengthened, but in the example he set for his family: that a life of honor is built patiently, defended quietly- but fiercely when warranted-and ultimately measured by the strength it leaves behind in others.

Importantly, in the last few months of his life, he focused on consequential life reflections while he leaned on his new faith and acceptance of the Lord.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Eugenia "Gg" Tarrance and his son, Haloway McCuistion Tarrance. He is survived by his wife, Debora Taylor Tarrance; his two sons and daughters-in-law, Lance III and Renee Tarrance (Dripping Springs, Texas) and Kyle and Darla Tarrance (Charlotte, North Carolina); his two brothers, Leslie Tarrance (The Woodlands, Texas) and Carter William Tarrance (Bisbee, Arizona); his stepdaughter and stepson-in-law, Jacqueline and John Coyne (Austin, Texas), and his seven grandchildren: Sarah Tarrance, Lance Tarrance IV, Cody Tarrance, Luke Tarrance, Austin Tarrance, John Patrick Coyne and Brian Coyne.

He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by his family and friends for his strength and honor.
