David Lewis Obituary

CRANSTON - David K. Lewis 69, of Cranston passed away on Tuesday after a short but courageous battle with cancer. He was surrounded by family and friends in the comfort of his home.

Born on base at Quonset Point, David was the youngest child of the late Samson Alven and Marguerite (DiLuglio) Lewis. Growing up, his family were avid supporters of the Rhode Island American Legion.

He was predeceased by his brother Sam Jr., and his three sisters, Jane, Sharyn, and Dorothy. He leaves behind his loving wife of 48 years, Diane (Roy) Lewis, children, Dan and Allie, foster daughter Wendy Evans in Florida, and many nieces and nephews.

David met Diane at Rocky Point Amusement Park, where he was operating the Flying Tigers Roller Coaster. Although they were only teenagers at the time, the two would marry a few short years later, weeks after Diane graduated from high school. David and Diane moved to New Mexico shortly after they were married. While stationed at Holloman Air Force Base in Alamogordo, David and Diane welcomed their first child. Though they would eventually return to Rhode Island and buy David's childhood home, they loved living in the desert. They frequently enjoyed going to concerts in El Paso, and driving into the mountains to see freshly fallen snow. As much as they loved their time in New Mexico, David and Diane loved the smell of fresh salt air best. After several honorable years of service in the Air Force, David would return home to a career in welding. Of all the places he worked, he was most proud of his 18 year career with Rolls Royce Naval Marine in Walpole, MA.

When David wasn't working and in better health, he often enjoyed fishing in his canoe at Roger Williams Park, long road trips, and going to the beaches in South County. According to him, welcoming a second child almost 18 years after the first helped to keep him young. Later in life, David was known for being a homebody who enjoyed watching movies and television from the comfort of his couch though preferably in the company of his family.
