PAWTUCKET - Erika E. (Bäsel) Danner, 79, passed away on Tuesday, May 26, 2020. She was the beloved wife of Gerhard Danner for 57 years. They would have celebrated their 58th anniversary this June. Born in Eschenfelden, Germany, she was one of eight children of the late Otto and Emma (Rottman) Bäsel. Erika came to the United States in 1959 where she began her own family and made a loving home. She was a longtime member of the German American Cultural Society in Pawtucket. Erika was the founder of the Pawtucket Youth Soccer League and a referee for many soccer leagues throughout Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and Connecticut.

Besides her beloved husband, she leaves two sons, Gary Danner and his wife, Sherry, of Seekonk and Rene Danner and his fiancée, Karen Kaiser, of Pawtucket; six grandchildren; four great-grand- children (with one on the way) and seven siblings, including Lore Kennett of Pawtucket.

Services and interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts to the German American Cultural Society, 78 Carter Ave., Pawtucket, RI 02861 would be appreciated. Arrangements are entrusted to William W. Tripp Funeral Home, Pawtucket. For online condolences: TRIPPFUNERALHOME.com

A wonderful teammate! Ericka was 40 and I was a college student, but we played soccer together on the Providence Metro Kickers on the RIWSL and went to tournaments together. A few times, we got lost. She shared her home w us and I just admired her. Thank you Danner family for sharing her. Meridy (Smith) Glenn

I am so very sorry to just recently learn of Erika's passing. She was a fun energetic woman who was a great cook, dancer and hostess. I will be forever grateful for the Sunday themed dances she put on at the German Club in RI. I would take my Dad Jack until he was almost 98. She always made him smile and laugh, especially in her costumes. Her energy was endless. She provided us with so many happy memories at a trying time. I am sure they are dancing in heaven every Sunday to some great bands.
To Geihard and your family, my deepest condolences and thank you for sharing her with us.

Over ten years ago, on our first visit to Pawtucket from the North Shore of Boston, I still remember the glowing smile and personal, warm welcome from Erika. She made Dave (my brother) and I feel so much at home, and shared her enthusiasm for polka dancing when it seemed all but given up on in our area. I cannot imagine the pain that Gerhard and her family are going through now. Please know that her generous spirit transcended languages and the local community, as committed as she was to Germany and Pawtucket. She has been a model of American citizenship and embraced life to the fullest. May we remember her best by following her wise and fun-loving example.

I'm so sorry to hear of this loss. But the news brings back very fond memories of Erika from my childhood in Pawtucket. She taught me to play soccer (though I was not her best student) and I played on her RI Soccer League team after high school. It was such a pleasure to be on the field with her back in 1978 or so with my old friend and Erika's neighbor, Ruth Tramonti. My sincere condolences to Gerhard and Gary and Rene. Erika was a special woman.

I was very sadden to see that Erika has left us and would like to extend my condolences on behalf of a grateful city. Polka dances at the German hall will never be the same. Erika was such a spitfire, she had such a zest for life smiling and enjoy every moment. When she committed to something, she gave it 100% and always had Gerhard at her side getting it accomplished. She will missed at the Octoberfest and many other events that meant so much to her. May she rest In peace in the light of god's true love.
