WOONSOCKET - Fred L. Corey, 91, of Woonsocket, former Woonsocket Public Works Director and Public Safety Director, founder of Corey Construction Company, died Friday, Feb. 16, 2018 in the St. Antoine Residence. He was the husband of the late Mary (Bulwa) Corey.

Born in Franklin, Mass., he was the son of the late Abraham and Rose (Kourie) Corey. He moved to Woonsocket when he was 12 years old, and resided there since.

Fred was a 1943 graduate of Woonsocket High School and a 1947 graduate of Brown University. Mr. Corey started his career in the construction business, serving ten years as Chief Estimator for the Dimeo Construction Company, Providence. He founded the Corey Construction Company in 1970, and retired in 1991. In 1959, former Woonsocket Mayor Kevin Coleman appointed Mr. Corey to the position of Public Works Director for the City of Woonsocket, where he served until 1966. In 1971, he was appointed to the position of Public Safety Director for the City of Woonsocket by then Mayor John A. Cummings, where he directed the construction of the Woonsocket Water Treatment Plant and the Lower Flood Control Project on the Blackstone River. He served as founding president of the Municipal Public Works Association. Fred served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He was a communicant of Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Church since its founding in 1953. Mr. Corey was an active member of the Woonsocket Rotary Club, serving as past president in 1995. He was an avid golfer and member of Kirkbrae Country Club.

He leaves his son, Fred S. Corey of Woonsocket; his daughter, Joyce M. Picard of Woonsocket; five grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his son, Thomas Corey, and his siblings, Anthony, James, and Louis Corey, Julia Lamoureux, Alice Salome, and Mary Joseph.

His funeral will be held Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2018 at 9 a.m. from the Holt Funeral Home, 510 So. Main St., with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Church, 1409 Park Ave. Burial will follow in Resurrection Cemetery, Cumberland. Calling hours are Tuesday from 4 to 6 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Woonsocket Rotary Charities Foundation, P.O. Box 154, Woonsocket, RI 02895.

So sorry for your loss. It was a pleasure to have known your father. I not only liked him, but greatly respected him. He, personally, helped me when I was in need. I am forever grateful for his friendship. Unfortunately I was away at the time of his passing but wanted you to know that I was saddened by the news.

Dear Joyce:
How sad and shocking to have read that your dad has passed. Jack & I had so many happy times with Fred & Mary at Kirkbrae, our trip to Jamaica, etc. Such fond memories that will last forever.
