Helen Moroney Obituary

We are celebrating a life - not mourning a death. While we are sad Helen Fairbrother Moroney will no longer be a part of our daily lives she will live on in our hearts and in our memories.
Helen lived an amazing life in her 96 years. She was born and raised in Pascoag and to her it was always home. Helen had a deep commitment to Burriville and to RI, evidenced by her involvement in public life. As a young woman she worked for Senator Theodore Green in Washington, DC from 1937-1961, for Governor Notte in RI 1961-1963, was a delegate to the democratic national convention for President John F Kennedy and then served out the remaining years of her service in the RI Legislative Council. And her public service didn't end there. She remained active on local boards and committees. A longtime member of the Blackstone Valley Tourism Council, in 2008 she was inducted into the William Blackstone Society in recognition of all she had done to make Blackstone Valley a tourist destination. Helen also served as the President of the Board of Trustees of the Pascoag Public Library and was so very proud to have had the new wing of the library dedicated to her in 2010. Helen was the driving force behind the awarding of a grant that funded the expansion of the library. As a longtime member of the Burriville Democratic Town Committee Helen remained active and engaged in RI politics, a lifelong love of hers. Throughout all of her public service she and her late husband, Jack Moroney, also ran businesses to help support the state of Rhode Island. They owned and operated the Ocean View Hotel on Block Island prior to the unfortunate fire that razed the business in 1966. They also started Echo Lake Campground in 1955 which has been running for over 60 years. To her nieces & nephews, Helen is best remembered for spending summers with Aunt Helen at "the lake".
Those summers helped define the family and will never be forgotten.
Helen is preceded in death by her husband John (Jack) Moroney, her sister Ruth Craig, and her 3 brothers - Gordon, John, and Edward. She leaves behind her 2 sisters-in-law, Pauline Laprade Fairbrother and Cecile Fairbrother, 13 nieces and nephews, and 16 great nieces and nephews. Helen was the matriarch for 3 generations of Fairbrothers and she will be greatly missed and always loved.
Her funeral is to be held at St. Joseph's Catholic Church 183 Sayles Ave. Pascoag, Tuesday, March 24th at 11:00am with burial immediately following at St. Patrick's Cemetery. There will be no calling hours. Arrangements under the direction of the Boucher Funeral Home, 272 Sayles Ave, Pascoag. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Pascoag Public Library, 57 Church St., Pascoag, RI 02859.

To Helen's Family: When I started working at 16 at Legislative Council, Helen was such a big help to my learning the ropes. She was always such a pleasant lady, and had so much patience with me learning the day-to-day rituals. I will always have fond memories of her. I'm lucky to have known you Helen.
