James Chase Obituary

CHEPACHET - James O. 'Jiggs' Chase, 91, a lifelong Chepachet resident, passed away peacefully, Friday July 31. He was the husband of the late Hazel E. (Wilson) Chase. Born in Providence, he was a son of the late Leon O. and Jennie (Greenhalgh) Chase. Mr. Chase was a contractor and owner of the former Henry H. Lewin, Inc. for many years before retiring.

An Army veteran of WWII, he served in the 710th Tank Battalion in the Philipines. He participated in the Ancients & Horribles Parade for over 60 years and was selected as the Honorary Grand Marshall twice. He served as a Cub Scout Leader for four years and Boy Scout Leader for six years as well as a volunteer fireman in Chepachet for 54 years, 15 of those years were spent as Chief. Mr. Chase also volunteered in the Chepachet Fire District Tax Office, as well as an ambulance driver for the Chepachet Ambulance Corps, and was a past vice president for the Glocester Manton Library. He was a past member of the Board of Directors for the Retired Senior Volunteer Program, a member of the Glocester Senior Center and delivered meals for Meals on Wheels to seniors and shut-ins. He was a 50-year member and Past Master of Friendship Lodge #7, F&AM, Chepachet, the Scottish Rite Valley of Providence and the Palestine Shrine. He was a Past President of the Chepachet Cemetery Association and was on the Building Code Board of Appeals for the Town of Glocester. He is survived by his three children, James A. Chase, Dr. Bruce E. Chase and Kathleen E. Cabral; one sister, Phyllis C. Steger; six granddaughters and two great-grandchildren.

His funeral will be held on Monday, August 3, at 9 a.m., from the Tucker-Quinn Funeral Chapel, 643 Putnam Ave. (Rt.44) Greenville, with a service to follow at 11 a.m. in Chepachet Union Church, 1138 Putnam Pike, Chepachet. Burial with military honors will be in Acotes Hill Cemetery, Chepachet.

Visitation will be today, Sunday, August 2, from 4-7 p.m. In lieu of flowers donations to the Chepachet Union Church, 1138 Putnam Pike, Chepachet, RI, 02814 or the Glocester Senior Center, 1210 Putnam Pike, Chepachet, RI, 02814 will be appreciated.

Mr. Chase will be missed. He was a resident at Overlook Nursing Home, and I had the pleasure of talking with him most days. He was always in good spirits, and was beloved by other residents and staff. Rest in peace my friend.
