Janet Smith

PAWTUCKET - Janet (Cosimini) Smith, of Pawtucket, passed away on Wednesday, February 7th, 2018 at Rhode Island Hospital surrounded by her loving family. Janet was the wife of the late Howell J. Smith Jr. She was born in Providence the daughter of the late Romeo and Zelinda (Tomellini) Cosimini.
Mrs. Smith was a registered pharmacist and co-owner of Howell Smith Druggist which has been serving the Pawtucket community since 1938. Janet and her husband Howell modernized the pharmacy to what it is today and their son Howell Smith III will carry on the family business.
Janet took great pride in being one of the first woman to graduate from the Rhode Island College of Pharmacy, however her greatest pleasure resulted from developing the cosmetic business and gift shop at the drug store and did so until she was 89 years old. In addition, Mrs. Smith was an avid sports enthusiast.
Janet is survived by her children, Leslie Hatch of Montclair, NJ, Joyce Cote of Portsmouth, RI, Howell Smith III of Seekonk and Gregory Smith of Lincoln. She also leaves ten grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. Janet was the grandmother of the late Jordan Hatch.
The funeral for Mrs. Smith will be Monday, February 12th at 9:00 am from the Manning-Heffern Funeral Home, 68 Broadway, Pawtucket. There will be a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Cecilia's Church, 1253 Newport Ave., Pawtucket at 10:00 am. Burial will be in Mt. St. Mary's Cemetery. The calling hours will be Sunday 4-7 pm in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Janet's memory to Rhode Island Shrine Center, One Rhodes Place, Cranston, RI 02905.
