Louis Read Obituary

CUMBERLAND - Louis "Lou" R. Read, 76, passed away unexpectedly at home on Tuesday, May 24, 2016. Born in Providence, a son of the late Louis F. and Elsie M. (Wildgust) Read, Lou resided in Pawtucket until moving to Cumberland in 1977. He was a Patrolman for the Pawtucket Police Department for thirty years before retiring in 1997.
Lou was a car enthusiast "In recognition of the upgrading of his vehicles and collection, his on-going work in the car collectors world, for the many years of dedication to the antique and car collector world, and his knowledge of antique cars. He started purchasing vehicles when they could be bought for "cheap money". He has the knack for finding the great buys and capitalizing on it. He believes in good, original vehicles and best of all, he believes in driving them - not just storing them."
He leaves four children, Donna M. Handel and her husband, Craig, Robert L. Read, Deborah Ann Read and her fiancé, Donald Soares, II and Shaun Louis Read and his wife, Melissa all of Cumberland; a granddaughter, Megan Read Partridge and a sister, Sandra Cross of Arizona.
His funeral will be held Saturday at 9:30 a.m. from William W. Tripp Funeral Home, 1008 Newport Ave., Pawtucket, followed by Committal Services at 11 a.m. at Mt. St. Mary Cemetery Chapel, 661 Prospect St., Pawtucket. VISITATION will be Friday 4 to 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, P.O. Box 1000, Dept. 142, Memphis, TN 38148 would be appreciated. TRIPPFUNERALHOME.com

I met Mr. Read, as a young man, when my brother served with him on the Pawtucket Police force. I remember him being a very kind man.
Just last Thursday, I was having breakfast with a retired Pawtucket officer, when Mr Read came in. I introduced myself and with a big smile, he said, Tommy Flanagan's brother.
We all talked until we had to go our separate ways. He shook my hand as we left and I called my brother to let him know, Mr Read said hi. He was so happy that I had met him again and retold me how nice a man Lou always was to him.
Today, having breakfast with my friend again, he received a call, letting him know about Lou's passing.
We just sat in disbelief, recalling having just seen him, one week earlier.
I called my brother, who shared our sad news. He was planning to call him, but now it was to late.
Goodbye Mr. Read, it was to see you again.
May you Rest in Peace!

I worked Louie for many years on the Pawtucket Police Department. We rode together in the paddy wagon midnight to 8AM. He was a great guy. We had breakfast many times in the old Menards Market and Rides Grill. He was a tough brave man. He had many beautiful antique cars. He always like to say his 1934 Packard once belonged to Marlene Dietrich. The car had a small silver plate on it which said Dietrich Inc. One of the other cars was a 1936 Cadillac that once belonged to Dorothy Dunlap of Dunlap Tires. I shall miss him a lot.
