Paul D. Nickerson Sr.

1950 - 2017

WOONSOCKET - Paul D. Nickerson, Sr., 67, of Woonsocket, RI passed away peacefully on Friday, August 18, 2017 at The Holiday. He was the beloved husband of Susan L. (Sunderland) Nickerson for 43 years. Born in Boston, on May 16, 1950, he was the son of the late Adelbert E. and Nancy I. (Smith) Nickerson. He was the loving father of Melanie L. Nickerson of Woonsocket, RI, Paul D. Nickerson, Jr. of Fryeburg, ME, Barry A. Nickerson and his wife, Sibel of Lincoln, RI, and Jerry P. Nickerson and his wife, Jessica of North Smithfield, RI. He leaves his cherished 12 grandchildren. He was the brother of Del Nickerson and his wife, Diane of Portland, ME, Nancy Cole of Bellingham, MA, Russ Nickerson of Franklin, MA, Ronnie Nickerson and his wife, Barbara of Randolph, MA, Joan Diehm of Michigan, and his identical twin brother Peter Nickerson and his wife, Lori of Brockton, MA.
Paul was engaged to Susan when he began working at Bird & Son Roofing Co. in Norwood, MA in 1973. He was as proud of his hard work there as he was of his Mayflower ancestry. Above all, he took pride in his entire family. When he retired after 41 years, the company had become known as CertainTeed, and Paul and Susan's 4 children had blessed them 12 times over with grandchildren.
Paul had a lifelong passion for the Patriots and for historical documentaries. He shared his love of stargazing with anyone who would look up at the skies with him on family camping weekends. Paul also liked to play guitar, and was known as an accomplished cook - "The Man with all the Recipes" - but this was only because he had no choice... !
His family's favorite memories of Papa include his tall tales and subversive jokes, which were told around the campfire and at holiday meals, alongside his legendary turkey stuffing. Grandchildren continue to debate the veracity of some claims. It must now be stated, for the record, that Papa did not get recruited for the Celtics, nor did he compose the song House of the Rising Sun. The indisputable fact remains, that Paul will live on in our hearts and be remembered for his own unique qualities and achievements, in which we his loving family take the deepest pride.
Funeral Service will be held on Friday, August 25th at 10:00AM at CARTIER'S FUNERAL HOME, 151 So. Main St. (Rte 126), Bellingham, MA. Interment will follow at the Scott Cemetery, Center St., Bellingham. Visiting hours are on Thursday, August 24th from 5PM to 8PM. Relatives and friends are invited to attend.
