Robert Smart Obituary

LINCOLN - Robert L. Smart, 89, of Lincoln passed away peacefully Monday, October 17, 2016 at Brookdale Sakonnet Bay, Tiverton with his family by his side. He was husband of 58 years to Jean F. (Herde) Smart.
Born in Providence, a son of the late Howard R. and Harriet (Randall) Smart, he grew up and lived in Lincoln nearly his entire life.
Besides his wife, he is survived by his children, Howard "Buzz" Smart and his wife, Joanne of Wakefield; Roberta S. Cox and her husband, Vernon of Sanford, ME; Harold "Harry" Smart and his wife, Linda of Portsmouth; and Andrew Smart and his wife, Christina of Raleigh, NC; He was the grandfather to Allison, Keaton, Christopher and Shana; and the great grandfather to Deston, Devon and Tadon. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late H. Randall Smart, Margaret S. Rogers and Harriet S. Hunt.
Robert was a World War II Navy veteran. Following the war, he graduated from Moses Brown School, Class of 1948, and attended Brown University, where he excelled in Wrestling.
Bob's civil engineering career spanned six decades working alongside colleagues at M.A. Gamino Construction Co.; Paragon Oil; Curran & Burton; Texaco; and Seaboard Construction Co.
Bob was an avid fan and supporter of the Brown University's Men's Wrestling Team, and was the recipient of the inaugural Friends of Brown Wrestling Award. He volunteered as Advancement Chairman of Troop #1, Pawtucket, Boy Scouts of America, and served as Warden of the former Fairlawn Fire District in Lincoln. He was a member of Lime Rock Baptist Church, Lincoln, where he served on the building committee. He was a member of Cumberland Post #14, American Legion, Cumberland; VFW Post #1271, Central Falls; St. John's Masonic Lodge #1, F. & A.M., Providence; and an Emeritus Member of the RI Society of the Sons of the American Revolution.
A Celebration of his life will be held Thursday, October 20 at 11 A.M. in Historic Swan Point Chapel, 585 Blackstone Boulevard, Providence. His burial will be private. Calling Hours are respectfully omitted. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Bob's memory to Cumberland Post #14, American Legion, 695 Broad Street, Cumberland, RI 02864 or to the Veterans' organization of your choice would be appreciated. I wish to express my sorrow at your loss. My Father and yours were good friends back in the 1970´s. You may remember camping out at my house and my visit to yours. I had a great time meeting you back then and always know that you father was a true friend to mine.
