Thomas Mefford Obituary

CUMBERLAND - MEFFORD, Thomas D., 72, of Cumberland, passed away Thursday, January 11, 2018 at the Jeanne Jugan Residence, Pawtucket, surrounded by his loving family.He was the husband of Cheryl (LaRose) Mefford and they had been married for 53 years.
Born in Monterey, CA, he was the son of the late James Martin Mefford and Virginia Sue (Patterson) Mefford and the step-son of the late Dale W. Conyers.
Mr. Mefford was a United State Navy, Vietnam War Veteran. Following his service to our country, Tom moved to Cumberland where he resided for most of his life.
He was a dedicated Patrolman for the Cumberland Police Department for over 20 years. Tom was also a Sergeant with the RI Airport Police, Warwick serving for 9 years.
A great man of faith, Tom served as an usher and a communicant of St. Aidan Church. He was a member of the National Fraternal Order of Police, Cumberland Fraternal Order of Police; past president of Knights of Columbus - St. Thomas Council and past Grand Knight. He was a 4th Degree Knight Faithful Navigator for the Rev. Patrick Delaney Assembly #1059. He was an avid volunteer to the residents and sisters of the Jeanne Jugan - Little Sisters of the Poor, Pawtucket, and was also a member of the Association Jeanne Jugan.
He was a friend to many, always available to listen and share advice. He enjoyed volunteering in the community, golfing, but most of all Tom loved his family.
Besides his beloved wife, he leaves his two sons, Thomas D. Mefford Jr. and his wife Tracey and Michael F. Mefford (Melissa Castaneda) all of Cumberland; his sister, Ginger Drapchaty of Colorado; his grandchildren who he adored, Timothy Mefford, Emily Mefford (Scott Trudel), Jacob Mefford and Nathan Mefford; as well as his great-grandson, Noah B. Trudel. He is also survived by loving brother and sister in laws as well as several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Faith E. Taylor of California.
A celebration of his life will be held Tuesday at 8:30 AM from the J. J. Duffy Funeral Home, 757 Mendon Road, Rt. 122, Cumberland. Mass of Christian Burial at 10 AM from in St. Aidan Church, 1460 Diamond Hill Road Cumberland. Committal prayers with military honors will follow at Resurrection Cemetery, Cumberland. Relatives and friends are kindly invited. Visiting Hours will be held Monday from 3 PM to 8 PM.
The Mefford family respectfully requests to omit flowers. Donations in his memory to the Little Sisters of the Poor - Jeanne Jugan Residence, 964 Main St, Pawtucket, RI 02860 would be deeply appreciated.
