William Mohamed Obituary

WOONSOCKET - William D. (Bill) Mohamed 81, passed away at Landmark Medical in Woonsocket, RI on January 2, 2021. He was born on February 18, 1939 and resided most of his life in Woonsocket.

Bill was the youngest child of Alley Mohamed and Blanche (LaForge) Mohamed. His mother's life was tragically cut short when Bill was only two years old and he was raised by his beloved aunt Julianna and his uncle Harry Thomas.

Bill was a graduate of Broms Barber Academy in Worcester, MA and was a barber in Woonsocket for many years (as was his father Alley). A unique man with a distinct sense of humor, he touched the lives of his customers in many ways. In his barber shop, customers paid for their haircut and received complementary advice on any number of topics whether they asked for it or not. Bill was also a lifelong student of the "sweet science" and in his evenings he trained hundreds of amateur boxers in his boxing gym in Woonsocket. Helping these young men apply the lessons learned in the ring to the challenges of life was his proudest accomplishment.

Bill is survived by his three children; Gary (and his wife Suzanne Lovett) of Scarsdale, NY, Linda Rodriguez of North Providence, and Kevin of Lincoln, RI and his five grandchildren: Zachary, Emma, Jacob, Evan and Josephina.

Bill's family would like to thank the wonderful caregivers who aided Bill during his final chapter. A celebration of Bill's remarkable life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers the family asks that his many friends share their favorite story about Bill.

A little late. Sorry to hear of coach Billys passing. I wonder if Gary remembers me. I fought for Billy in the mid 1970s to mid 1980s. He was my third trainer and certainly one of the most colorful. I could tell you stories for hours about our travels from gym to gym ( many which we got thrown out of!) and from fight to fight all over southern NE. I was from Worcester and Bill hand picked me out of a stable of boxers at the Ionic Ave Boys club. I remember Gary fighting as a young kid, he was on the AAU bouts with me. I loved Bill as a trainer and never forgot him. The last time I saw him I was a coach and he told my team that I could have been a World Champion and called me "the man who refused to be a champion." God bless Bill's soul. Rip Coach. Gary I hope you are well. You had a great father. He'll always be part of my life. Freddie Potenti

I won´t use the name "Bill" because he was always "Mr. Mohamed, to me. I had the utmost respect for this man, his advice, his family and his home. I looked up to him. He was the only man beside my own father who ever stepped forward to teach me how to fight and defend myself. He was an upstanding human being and as a kid, there was much to learn from him. I say a prayer upon learning of his passing this year and extend my family´s deepest condolences to his. Our hearts go out especially to Linda, Kevin and Gary; for all the memories we shared together, while Bill allowed it. Stay salty Bill, you will not be soon forgotten. God bless you! I just saw this, my condolences. Bill was a professional and a gentleman. He would tell it like it is. We called him the "Head Doctor". We had alot of laughs at that shop.
